All Rath wants is a quiet, peaceful life. Unfortunately, his father brings him too much trouble - and too many debts to pay - for that to ever be possible. When the local crime lord drags Rath out of bed and tells him he has three days to pay his father's latest debt, Rath doesn't know what to do. There's no way to come up with so much money in so little time.

Then a friend poses an idea just ridiculous enough to work: enter the Tournament of Losers, where every 75 years, peasants compete for the chance to marry into the noble and royal houses. All competitors are given a stipend to live on for the duration of the tournament - funds enough to cover his father's debt. All he has to do is win the first few rounds, collect his stipend, and then it's back to trying to live a quiet life....

Fantastic rags to riches story!

This is one of those stories, that I thought was one thing – but it’s really something else.

I chose it for a Paranormal story and there are some elements of that – but far and away – this is more an historical fantasy rather than anything else.

It has a romantic thread – to be sure – but it’s mostly about a young boy with no prospects finding his way to the top of the food chain simply because he’s such a good hearted person.

It’s fast paced (after the first 25%) and a page turner. Usually I’m disappointed when the romance isn’t the central part of the story, but in this case the story itself is so charming that I couldn’t be sad!

The narration is done very well by Michael Stellman and though he doesn’t go crazy with the accents, it’s always clear who is speaking and I felt very immersed in the time.

If you’re in the mood for a really uplifting story where the good guy gets what he deserves, this is it!

Highly Recommended!

Top of my Fantasy Romance list.

I have listened to this story probably twenty times. It is a fallback story for me. When all the other stories slip into the forgotten, this one is always pulls me back for a listen. Good guys bad guys, romance, prince and pauper,. it has it all.

Great Short Book That You Can Finish In A Day.

PLOT - Rath has to enter the Tournament of Loser. When had to get money to pay off his father debt. He get the money then his wants to quit the tournament by his lover tell him to stay in it. Rath try to found why and who was hurt he family.
NARRATED - Michael Stellman - The narrated tell the story great. He create the character that sound different and you can really get in to the story.
RATE - I rated it 5 of 5 because the author write a really great book. The author writes book the really suck you in.

Could have been better

This book ended so abruptly that it kind of ruins the rest of the book sadly. Loved the story and wished it had continued on to the inevitable.

the narrator's fake English accent was a bit

annoying at first but after a while I stopped noticing and just enjoyed the story

Theoretically this is a M/M Fantasy Romance,but the fact that the lovers are both men is entirely beside the point. In the universe Megan Derr has created, while people definitely have gender and sexual orientation, it has no bearing socially. All are completely equal. And since there is no graphic sex in the book, one can simply get swept away by the delightful romance of it. The story is predictable only in the way ALL Fairytales are predictable. Anyone who has ever read fairytales is going to know from the outset how this will play out. Again, beside the point. It's so wonderfully told and the characters are so likable and relatable, that it was a joy to read/listen to. The narrator was fabulous and really brought it to life. I will be looking for that narrator again.

Reading like a YA book geared toward adults, I very much enjoyed following Rath as he unwillingly progressed through the Tournament of Losers.

Although predictable in plot and lacking great complexity in characters, I happily cheered Rath on in his quest to win the tournament.

Megan Derr created an intriguing world were sexual identity and gender roles played NO part in society--Very, very refreshing! Just imagine a world where gender labels don't exist!!

A definite comfort read/listen!!!

Adorable

Cute story with some predictable turns, but one that reads like a fable in the best way possible! Rath is prickly on the outside with a gooey sweet center that he tries and fails to hide at every turn. He believes that no good deed goes unpunished, but he does them anyway, and (eventually) is rewarded for his heart of gold.

Narrator and audio quality leaves much to be desired. There is occasional background noise or buzzing in the recording, and the narrator frequently mispronounces words, including inconsistent pronunciation of the two main characters' names.

This one's a winner!

I don't know how she does it, but I hope she just keeps on doing it. Megan Derr is magic. She never fails to surprise me and amaze me with every book of hers that I've listened to.

This one is another wonderfully written book by a master storyteller. The world-building is epic, the details, the history, the culture and the society where the story is set, it's exquisite, really. The main and supporting characters are fleshed out and likeable. They're very dynamic and although set in fantasy world, you can't help but relate to their plight.

While some aspects are predictable and you're thrilled to know you're right, it works well with the premise. I wish one of the challenge was more on page, it left me hanging and wanting to know what happened in the mountains.

Overall, I think this book should be longer because it's a world we can easily get hooked and lost in. The story is engaging and you're rooting for Rath from the get-go and you're cheering for him until the very end of the story. Michael Stellman's narration was incredible. This is truly a joy to listen to!
