Bun Yom arrived in the United States with not one penny, with only the clothes he was wearing, and without knowing a single word of English. Through hard work, he now has his own home, a family, a restaurant, and many friends. It took twenty years before he was ready to write about his years in the killing fields, but for the sake of kids everywhere, he has finally done it.

Excellent Autobiography! Some reader errors.

The only reason I knock one star off is because this could have benefited from a through proof-listen prior to release. The reading was clear, lovely, and competent, but there were errors that should have been eliminated in the end-production process. It is absolutely still worth the listen, and an important piece of first-hand history, so don't let the errors put you off!

Lacking detail, feeling

The narrator didn't seem to put much feeling into the story...and the story itself seems to lack detail.

I don't know what to say.

Regardless of the author's grasp of English, he writes in such a way that there's no beating around the bush. To the story, it boggles the mind. It's not clear why, after story's such as his, people could support let alone advocate Marxism on any form.
This story broke my heart and I will remember it always.

riveting and inspirational

could not wait to continue listening. having visited the Killing fields in Cambodia, and traveled in many of the areas discussed, it is obvious that what he experienced was true. it's shocking and appalling the khmer rouge and ISIS (same same but different) is even allowed to exist after what we witnessed as a people in WWII.

True Heroic Story

This audible book requires patience and some ability to look beyond the flaws of its delivery. The writing and narration are not polished or "professional" in any sense. But this is such a compelling true story of the horrific Cambodian war that must be told. If you can get past the first part of the book and stay with the story line-- you will be educated and rewarded for your patience as you learn of an amazing survivor, a true hero and his incredible life.

Raw and unpolished

Bun Yom - a kind young kid who was forced to labor under the Khmer Rouge in the Killing Fields and survived. Became a freedom fighter and yet remained kind even towards the same Khmer Rouge who enslaved and killed so many. If you are looking for your typical Hollywood story - you best move on because this is about a real life of survival and hope and death. And don’t judge Bun Yom’s way of talking or his style like others have . Tomorrow I’m dead is real not fake like Hollywood.
