La novela de Dickens, Tiempos difíciles se desarrolla en Inglaterra en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX, época de la Segunda Revolución Industrial, donde puede verse reflejado la calidad de vida de los obreros, sus problemas, en contraste con la gran vida que tienen los empresarios. Tomas Gradgind es un hombre al que sólo le interesan la realidad y las cosas serias, nunca utiliza la imaginación, tiene dos hijos Luisa y Tomas, a los que desde pequeños les ha educado con sus ideales sin dejarles usar la imaginación. Gradgind tenia un gran amigo, el señor Bounderby, banquero y empresario muy respetado en la ciudad, decía que su madre le había dejado abandonado con su abuela y que ésta le había pegado hasta que un día se escapo, y con poco dinero consiguió llegar a ser un hombre importante. A lo largo de toda la novela el señor Bounderby cuenta sus historias de cuando era joven y tuvo que salir a delante por sus propios medios, con muchas calamidades.
