Als twee singles elkaar bij een televisiespelletje ontmoeten, zet dit een reeks onverwachte gebeurtenissen in gang.

Freddy van Ee is een succesvol schrijfster die met haar twee katten in een schattig dijkhuisje in Amsterdam-Noord woont. Ze houdt er niet van om in de belangstelling te staan, maar laat zich toch door haar uitgeefster overtuigen om mee te doen aan een tv-spelletje. In het panel zit ook de beroemde Nick Jacobs, een van oorsprong Nederlandse countryzanger die vroeg in zijn carrière naar de VS is verhuisd en nu in Nederland is omdat zijn moeder zorg nodig heeft. Nick en Freddy vinden, vol verwondering, iets bij elkaar waarvan ze beiden niet hadden gedacht dat het nog zou kunnen.
De half-Surinaamse Odile Norton is opgevoed door haar alleenstaande moeder Serafina, die nooit heeft willen zeggen wie Odiles vader is. Wat Odile wel weet is dat het iemand was voor wie haar moeder meer voelde dan voor de stoet bedpartners die daarna volgde. Als Serafina ongeneeslijk ziek wordt, verbreekt Odile haar toch al slechte relatie en trekt bij haar moeder in. Samen kijken ze veel naar het tv-spelletje waarin Freddy en Nick meedoen. Het valt Odile op dat haar moeder een ongewone fascinatie heeft voor Nick; zal Serafina haar zwijgen nog doorbreken voordat het te laat is?
