Welcome to World War I, formerly known as the “Great War”, where men fought and died in trenches and did whatever they could to avoid chemical weapon attacks. You may have read a few things about World War One or remember some things from your history classes, but this book is here to help fill in the blanks. Get ready to learn all about World War One, from the ideologies and complex geo-political alliances that led to war, to how average soldiers tried to deal with life in the trenches. This book will bring to life some of the most important battles, but it will also go far beyond that to how the war ended and how it continued to linger on for many, especially those with PTSD.
You’ll learn:
- What roles did nationalism, colonialism, and the European alliance structure play in the start of the war?
- Who thought that trench warfare was a good idea?
- Why did the Germans wear those spiked helmets?
- How did chemical warfare get introduced and what role did it play?
- How did the rise of communism seriously affect the course of the war?
Each chapter of our trivia books is broken up into 15 short sections that will introduce you to major players, major ideas, and sometimes weird stories. Unlike your high school history teacher, we’re not going to put you to sleep with the names of a million generals, or an endless line of dates, but instead we’ll show you the war from a series of different perspectives and themes. To go along with the 15 short breakdowns of the war, every chapter also ends with 20 fun facts or bits of trivia, and five questions to test your knowledge on World War One.
So put on your pickelhaube, man the trenches, and get ready to learn....

Many people in the West look upon the Second Sino-Japanese War, which took place in the 1930s and 1940s, as a sort of sideshow to the larger Second World War, but there is no separating the two. Imagine the Pacific War, the theater of World War II that took place in the Pacific. If the Japanese were not busy fighting on another front, they would have had millions of more troops available to fight the Americans and the British. In all likelihood, World War II would have ended the same way, but it would have taken much longer and cost that many more lives.

Historia
On a summer day in 1914, a nineteen-year-old Serbian nationalist gunned down Archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo. While the world slumbered, monumental forces were shaken. In less than a month, a combination of ambition, deceit, fear, jealousy, missed opportunities, and miscalculation sent Austro-Hungarian troops marching into Serbia, German troops streaming toward Paris, and a vast Russian army into war, with England as its ally. As crowds cheered their armies on, no one could guess what lay ahead in the First World War.

In this Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, historian Barbara Tuchman brings to life the people and events that led up to World War I. This was the last gasp of the Gilded Age, of Kings and Kaisers and Czars, of pointed or plumed hats, colored uniforms, and all the pomp and romance that went along with war. How quickly it all changed...and how horrible it became.

The must-have companion to Bill O'Reilly's historical docudrama Legends and Lies: The Patriots, an exciting and eye-opening look at the Revolutionary War through the lives of its leaders. The American Revolution was neither inevitable nor a unanimous cause. It pitted neighbors against each other as loyalists and colonial rebels faced off for their lives and futures. These were the times that tried men's souls: No one was on stable ground, and few could be trusted.

The Rifle is the inspirational story of a 28-year-old US Marine, Andrew Biggio, who returned home from combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, full of questions about the price of war. He found answers from those who survived the costliest war of all - WWII veterans. It began when Biggio bought a 1945 M1 Garand Rifle, the most common rifle used in WWII. When Biggio showed the gun to his neighbor, WWII veteran Corporal Joseph Drago, it unlocked memories Drago had kept unspoken for 50 years.

War: How Conflict Shaped Us explores such much-debated and controversial questions as: When did war first start? Does human nature doom us to fight one another? Why has war been described as the most organized of all human activities? Why are warriors almost always men? Is war ever within our control?

If history really belongs to the victor, what happens when there's more than one side declaring victory? That's the conundrum Norman Davies unravels in his groundbreaking book No Simple Victory. Far from being a revisionist history, No Simple Victory instead offers a clear-eyed reappraisal, untangling and setting right the disparate claims made by America, Great Britain, France, and the Soviet Union in order to get at the startling truth.

Storm Clouds over the Pacific begins the story long before Pearl Harbor, showing how the war can only be understood if ancient hatreds and long-standing geopolitics are taken into account. Harmsen demonstrates how Japan and China's ancient enmity led to increased tensions in the 1930s, which, in turn, exploded into conflict in 1937.

In sobering detail, The Korean War chronicles a US home front agitated by Joseph McCarthy, where absolutist conformity discouraged open inquiry and citizen dissent. Cumings incisively ties our current foreign policy back to Korea: an America with hundreds of permanent military bases abroad, a large standing army, and a permanent national security state at home, the ultimate result of a judicious and limited policy of containment evolving into an ongoing and seemingly endless global crusade.

Winston Churchill is generally considered one of the greatest leaders of the 20th century, revered for his opposition to appeasement, his defiance in the face of German bombing of England, his political prowess, and his memorable speeches. He became the savior of his country, as prime minister during the most perilous period in British history, World War II, and is now perhaps even more beloved in America than in England. This revelatory book takes on Churchill in his entirety, separating the man from the myth that he so carefully cultivated.

Russia is a country with no natural borders, no single ethnic group, no true central identity. At the crossroads of Europe and Asia, it has been subject to invasion by outsiders, from Vikings to Mongols, from Napoleon’s French to Hitler’s Germans. In order to forge an identity, it has mythologized its past to unite its people and to signal strength to outsiders. In A Short History of Russia, Mark Galeotti explores the history of this fascinating, glorious, desperate, and exasperating country.

Examining nine landmark battles from ancient to modern times - from Salamis, where outnumbered Greeks devastated the slave army of Xerxes, to Cortes' conquest of Mexico to the Tet offensive - Victor Davis Hanson explains why the armies of the West have been the most lethal and effective of any fighting forces in the world. Looking beyond popular explanations such as geography or superior technology, Hanson argues that it is in fact Western culture and values which have consistently produced superior arms and soldiers.

Prominent military historian Victor Davis Hanson explores the nature of leadership with his usual depth and vivid prose in The Savior Generals, a set of brilliantly executed pocket biographies of five generals (Themistocles, Belisarius, William Tecumseh Sherman, Matthew Ridgway, and David Petraeus) who single-handedly saved their nations from defeat in war. War is rarely a predictable enterprise - it is a mess of luck, chance, and incalculable variables. Today's sure winner can easily become tomorrow's doomed loser.

Great little book
World War 1. Trivia.
Great book full of interesting pieces of information and many little known facts.
Well written and presented.

Great Overview of the War
This may be the perfect introduction to World War I for the non-specialist. It’s fast moving, entertaining, and remarkably informative. World War I is a highly complex topic, but O’Neil brilliantly breaks it down into digestible nuggets covering an amazing amount of territory in just four hours of audiobook. Not only does he cover expected topics like the causes of the war and the big battles, he gets into a lot of the smaller but important factors in the war like why the U.S. was so reluctant to get involved and the background to the eruption of communism in Russia.
If you’re interested in history but tend to find the typical scholarly monograph overly dry, this is a great book for you. When you’re finished you’ll have a general understanding of the war and its causes, plus it’s entertaining enough that you’ll be sad when you’re done.

An interesting approach to history
It's hard not to wonder about most of the questions in this book. I guess this was the mindset of the author while making this book. It answers most of the famous questions about the ideologies, political issues and implications of the war. Learning via trivias is convenient and easy. The information is small, and presented in a fun way to aid assimilation. Overall, this might just be a good way to teach history to millenials.

Entertaining and informative
I enjoyed this entertaining and informative history of the first world war. When I was in school, we never made it much further than the civil war. Through Mr. O'Neill's books/audiobooks, I have learned about the Vietnam war, Korean was, and now World War I in quick, informative, entertaining, and sometimes tragic fashion. The books provide a brisk, yet pretty comprehensive, description of the events and philosophies that led to the wars. Before I listened to this audiobook, I think all I remembered was that the assassination of some Archduke started the war. Now I know more about the influences that brought on the war and how events still relevant today have their origin in that conflict. Kudos on an educating and entertaining listen!
Excellent narration! Mr. Miller's delivery is well-paced and tonally varied (i.e. not monotone).

Excellent work
How much do you know about the WW1? Well, this trivia book helps it's listeners find the answer to that question. For some people, it is sometimes best to learn history via trivia. This way, it is not as boring or depressing as sitting in a history class for hours. This book asks random questions about this great time in modern history, along with deeply researched and verified answers which make the listener more informed afterwards. Good stuff.

A Great WW1 Trivia Book
This is yet another great trivia book by Bill O’Neill, this time about World War 1. What’s great is that I learned more about this time of our history. I’ve learned much about military history due to marrying a military history buff but I was surprised by how much more I was able to learn from this book. As usual, Mr O’Neill does his homework on a topic and brings it to the world in an easy to follow and fun format. The narration by Scott Miller is well done. He has a nice voice to listen to and reads at an easy pace. Overall, a fun way to learn more about World War 1.
