Happy Surprise
When we chose this book we wondered if we would enjoy it. The alcoholism that seemed to be a problem of the main character and others felt like a drawback, a grim element of the story. But as the story unfolded the author's compassion and perceptiveness stretched our hearts. Never a boring book, the story is continually alive with emotional intensity, which keeps your interest and enthusiasm, and yet at times I looked forward to a shift into a more calm mode. The humor of the author was delightful and brought a refreshing balance to the difficulties faced by the characters. We thoroughly enjoyed the story and the reading of the boook and commend it to you!

slice of Irish life -- okay; not fabulous
Not McLynn's finest writing, but an interesting and enjoyable listen, especially if, like me, you have a hard time finding novels that don't feature murder, mayhem, & gratuitous porn. This piece is narrated by McLynn herself, and she is a professional actor, so it's well done, with perfect emphasis in all the right places, in a brogue that is mostly easily understandable for an American listener. The only quibble I have is that her voice is breathy and therefore difficult to hear in a noisy environment. McLynn's more recent book, "Bright Lights & Promises," is definitely a 5-star read.

Very enjoyable
I was drawn in by the characters. I could not stop listening to the audio book to learn more about the characters problems and how they would respond to them. It was up lifting how positive thinking or hope, could help put serious issues into prospective and not defeat the individual or the family. I would listen to this book again.
