Such a good story

I wasn’t expecting this to be as good bc it didn’t have many reviews. I’m very critical but honestly I enjoyed the story, characters and performance a lot. If you like historical fiction, it’s an interesting window to this time.

A Realistic Drama

This book, while its theme centers around the brothels, whoredom, and sex, is descriptive without being pronographic. It is not smut. Instead, we get the dramas and dangers of being a slave of the time period, including the reality of the situation. Yes, there are mentions of reproductive organs and swearing, but used in a way that benefits the history; it does nothing to glorify the slavery, human trafficking, or sex trade. What was relevant then, is relevant in today's world as well.

The storyline is excellent, and the book ends with twist that I did not expect. In a fairytale world, the ending is complete and happy. I was satisfied with the way this ended. The characters are colorful and various. I did not want to stop listening from start to finish.

The narrator was terrific. Her voice is soothing and smooth, and does really well flexing in between characters.

You MUST listen to this book!

Everyone romanticized the wealthy ruins of upper class Pompeii l. This book depicts the underpass that services the excessive Roman gluttony. Amara and her sister prostitutes practically leap out of the story to surround you with their life stories.

Mesmerizing!

I haven’t enjoyed a book series this much since The Circle of Ceridwen saga. Transfixed by the captivating storyline & stellar narration, I couldn’t put it down.

I basically listened to this series straight through as each book flowed into the next maintaining its grip the entire way through.

The descriptive narrative transported me back to Pompeii bringing alive the sights, sounds, and the smells of the ancient city. I felt as if I was a bystander watching the story play out before me.

If historical fiction is your thing, The Wolf Den series is sure to please.

Great Listen!

I've been on a bit of a rough patch with my listens lately. Wow, this was a breath of fresh air. Characters are distinct, action moves fast, and the tensions build up, over and over. I found myself on edge, willing the girls to break free. Well done!!

Never read anything quite like it!

I really loved this listen. The story had me glued, and the narrator was wonderful!

Beautiful Realism

I’m very pleased with this crisp and deliberate telling of the lives of the pleasure women in Roman times. Despite being poor, reduced to pleasing the worst of customers and social shame, Amara is resilient and ambitious, savvy and caring. Her loss of naivety with the unraveling of life events, the hard choices she has to make, her profound loss is beautiful and relatable in an abstract way that makes her likable. The other ladies are in their own ways beautiful and tragic as well as the men (well, some of them). I’m glad I bought it.

The book was excellent and heartfelt. I couldn’t stop listening! The descriptions of Pompeii and the people are amazing.

Hard to like any of the characters

I love ancient Rome and historical fiction....and it's not like I didn't expect a story centered around a brothel to be pretty brutal. But this was hard - foul language, unlikeable characters (all of them!), and not a series I will continue with.
