A murder with three witnesses. But one of them doesn’t believe what she saw...

Halloween, Whitby. DCI Jim Oldroyd’s daughter Louise is in town with friends for a goth festival. But their visit to an escape room ends in bloody murder when one of the group stabs his girlfriend and flees the scene. It’s a crime with three witnesses - but Louise refuses to take what she saw at face value.

Oldroyd and DS Carter are called in to solve the case, assisted from the sidelines by Louise. But the closer they investigate, the more complex the web of deceit appears. This is no straightforward crime of passion.

With a violent murderer on the loose, it’s only a matter of time before they strike again. And this time it’s personal. Oldroyd must expose the truth, protect his daughter and stop the horror before it’s too late.

I am in love with these books and have read every one and enjoyed them immensely. This one was borderline “Scooby Doo”-esque and a little over the top. But I will continue to read every he puts out, this one was just a little silly

Fun series

Disappointed in the plot. Loved the Whitby setting. Performance struck me as overdramatic. Women's voices occasionally sounded like a Monty Python spoof/sketch - shrill & out of cadence. Not Ellis' best book nor Page's best performance.

Lots of atmosphere so so plot

Quotations from Dracula, a small town murder creepiness running.up.and down your spine.. You need something.more? The mystery in this novel is intriguing while allowing the reader the chance to look closely.at the characters. Well.done.

Loved It

There were many things I enjoyed about this book but it was not my favorite of a series that I truly love. The first half of the book, although based on an interesting premise of the seaside town where Count Dracula came to England and the vampire themed escape room, I thought it was a little lackluster. It seemed to lack the usual enthusiasm and Yorkshire history and color. The second half of the book picked up with more mystery, complicated plot and character development and as usual, the final solution centered on smoke and mirrors. Oldroyd of course if famous for solving impossible murders that involve deception, lies and illusion. This case was special because his daughter was involved and it also developed the relationship between Oldroyd and his new love interest. I just did not feel the same excitement in reading it until the second half. The narrator does a great job of Oldroyd's raspy Yorkshire voice but in this book he sometimes forgot and used Oldroyd's distinctive voice for some of the younger characters and it did not seem right. The book is still definitely worth the read.

Interesting tie to Dracula but not his best

The plot isn't terribly interesting. The narration - gruff, gravelly voice for all characters - results in little in the way of character development.

Narration almost ruins mediocre book

I love this series . . . and I love the people in it. A goth festival in Whitby attracts thousands of people, and Louise, DCI Jim Oldroyd’s daughter and a group of her friends plan an outing to an escape room, all dressed up in their gothic best. But when a night out turns deadly, and one of her friends appears to kill his girlfriend in the escape room, Louise and the remaining friends are flabbergasted. Louise refuses to believe what she clearly saw, her friend stabbing his girlfriend. Louise calls her dad, DCI Oldroyd to help investigate. Its a back and forth with the local police as to whether or not its a clear case of murder. And then Louise begins getting text messages from the missing boyfriend. Oldroyd's gut tells him he is missing something and that there's more to the case. The tie ins to Count Dracula are well done and interesting. I like that this book includes quite a bit about Oldroyd's family and personal life. Some listeners found this book slower than others, but not me. I appreciate the relationship that he has with his team and enjoy their lives as well. I was stumped as to where the story was going or how the case was going to be solved. There were plenty of twists and turns to keep me intrigued. Excellent story and an ending well worth the wait.

Love the narrator. Makes the characters come alive. J.R. Ellis paints a great picture of the setting. Always an enjoyable read. As soon as I finish I can't wait for the next one.
