After a brief revival following World War I, during which it successfully defeated a Soviet attempt to invade in an effort to carry "international revolution" into Germany and Central Europe, Poland once again fell victim to its neighbors in 1939. Adolf Hitler's Third Reich and Josef Stalin's USSR collaborated in the conquest and then split Poland between them.

The Germans instituted oppressive rule in their portion of Poland, executing some 7,000 people on political grounds and imprisoning thousands of others. One and a half million Poles became forced laborers in Germany, and though seldom noted, the Soviets applied equally brutal methods in their sector, executing 22,000 Polish officers at the Katyn Forest Massacre. NKVD death squads murdered 40,000 civilians and deported 1.4 million people to Siberia and other remote areas, from which a sizable percentage never returned alive.

As the Soviets began to push the Germans back west, the Red Army plunged headlong into Poland in late June 1944, on the heels of German Army Group Center's retreating forces. The British urged the AK to cooperate with the Soviets, but the Russians wanted Poland and treated the Resistance as enemy partisans. The NKVD arrested AK members by the thousands, executing their leaders out of hand.

By late July the Polish government in exile thought it was time to order the AK to lead an uprising in Warsaw. The sight of German units retreating and Soviet tanks seen on July 31 very close to the city prompted the order to openly retake Poland's capital for the nation. Unfortunately it was a decision also predicated on a naively optimistic faith in Anglo-American support.

As a result the Poles fought bravely but futilely in August and September against the Nazis, and the Nazis, as they so often did, mercilessly destroyed the city causing the trouble. Heinrich Himmler, the head of the notorious SS, told his men, "The city must completely disappear from the surface of the earth and serve only as a transport station for the Wehrmacht. No stone can remain standing. Every building must be razed to its foundation." In fact the Germans had intended to destroy Warsaw from the beginning of the war, and they were terribly successful. One Allied pilot recalled, "There was no difficulty in finding Warsaw. It was visible from 100 kilometers away. The city was in flames, but with so many huge fires burning it was almost impossible to pick up the target marker flares." It's estimated that up to 200,000 Poles were killed in the process, and to top it all off, the Soviets arrested and executed countless more after the Nazis were finally gone.

A great introductory work

Polish history in english is a rare thing. While the narrator was not well versed in the topic and mispronounced some words that were phonetically sounded earlier, the content was great and this was a perfect jumping off point to find out more about key figures and events. Definitely worth 4 hours of your time and a couple bucks.

Wow Awesome!

I very much enjoyed this book. Good history and information about the Uprising. It was fun to learn that Poland did not just role over like most people say they did.

The worst narration that I have heard in a audiobook in a very long time. The reader read too fast and it was difficult to discern the endings and beginnings of sentences and paragraphs. The reader did not even attempt to pronounce Polish names and places correctly. The content of the material itself was rather superficial.

Great Read

The Warsaw Uprising of 1944: The History of the Polish Resistance's Failed Attempt to Liberate Poland's Capital from Nazi Germany was a good read by Charles River Editors. In 1939 Germany and the USSR invaded Poland to split the country between the two. This book follows the attempts by the Polish people to take their land back. This was a good historical read by the author.

This is perfect for a quick read on this topic without too much academic writing. There's just enough background to understand the context.

A fascinating glimpse into a window of WW2

I love history especially military history. I am fascinated by the valor and bravery exemplified by many as well as thoroughly shocked at the atrocities committed during war as well. Mankind’s methods of developing deadlier and deadlier weapons is intriguing as well. In this glimpse into a 6 week period where the polish attempted to retake Warsaw was enthralling. I learned of an amazing photo showing a two ton she’ll striking Poland’s first skyscraper which is where the last bit of polish resistance holed up. I also learned of the devastating weapon that launched that shell and of the miniature demolition tanks that the Germans used. Anyone who likes military history will truly enjoy this short yet engaging account of this window into history. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher

grim and graphic

Grim and graphic, this telling of the Nazi plan to annihilate the entire population of Poland and replace them with German citizens was appalling and new to this Boomer. I had been aware that the Red Army had its own agenda with regard to the land, but not how cruelly sadistic many of the leaders were when not held in check. The bravery and desperation of the resistance forces is legendary, but I was blissfully unaware of the near total neglect by the allied governments. This was a necessary but unwelcome wake up call.

Great story of these brave people

Hesitated on getting this due to the couple of negative reviews, but was interested in the topic so gave it a try. I thought the negatives of those reviews ended up being nitpicky, and didn’t take away from the enjoyment at all. Great info.

Sometimes forgotten

Warsaw Uprising. A piece of often overlooked history.
This ia a short compact look at this event.
Precise and instructive.
Narrators pronunciations of some German and Polish words and names were off a little. But that isn't a big issue.
A good read - Lest ee forget these heroic people.

Extremely Poor Narration

The Warsaw Uprising of 1944 is a very good story. The overall information in this book is very interesting and frankly I would like to learn more. The downside to this entire book and the reason I I am rating this so poorly is because of the narration of David Hubbard. Mr. Hubbard should've never been given this job. His narration, mainly is voice doesn't allow the listener to understand, enjoy or even want to keep listening. He sounds more like a sports talk radio host than someone who is telling me about one of the most important events in the history of the mid-20th century. If this book is ever voiced again, I would hope they find someone better. His entire performance took away from any interest or enjoyment I would've had.
