The ancient Toltecs believed that life, as we perceive it, is a dream. We each live in our own personal dream, and these come together to form the dream of the planet, or the world in which we live. Problems arise when our perception of the dream becomes clouded with negativity, drama, and judgment (of ourselves and others), because it's in these moments of suffering that we have forgotten that we are the architects of our own reality and we have the power to change our dream if we choose.

The very strange but nevertheless true story of the dark underbelly of a 1960s hippie utopia. Laurel Canyon in the 1960s and early 1970s was a magical place where a dizzying array of musical artists congregated to create much of the music that provided the soundtrack to those turbulent times. But there was a dark side to that scene as well. Many didn't make it out alive, and many of those deaths remain shrouded in mystery to this day.

Jeff German, a veteran Las Vegas Review-Journal investigative reporter, was no stranger to controversy or the danger of his work. For more than four decades, he wrote stories relentlessly confronting the mob, corrupt politicians, and greedy bureaucrats. In the 1910s, as the birth control movement was born, two leaders emerged: Margaret Sanger and Mary Dennett. Sanger would go on to found Planned Parenthood, while Dennett’s name has largely faded from public awareness. Each held a radically different vision for what reproductive autonomy and birth control access should look like in America. Few are aware of the fierce personal and political rivalry that played out between Sanger and Dennett over decades—a battle that had a profound impact on the lives of American women.

On July 3, 1972, twenty-four hippies from Clearwater, Florida, set up tents and settled in for the night at Briar Bottom, a public US Forest Service campground in western North Carolina. The impromptu campout was a pit stop for the group on their way to a Rolling Stones concert in Charlotte. Early that evening, they drank beer, smoked marijuana, and listened to rock music as they anticipated the good times that lay ahead. Near midnight, the county sheriff showed up with six deputies, allegedly responding to a noise complaint. They were armed with pistols and five sawed-off 12-gauge shotguns.

1900s Society
The history written in this novel is narrated very well. The narrator uses an engaging tone that it make feel as if the story is being told to you specifically. The language used is engaging. When you listen to the story, you realize that all social status had their ups and downs. I was able to understand the fortunes and misfortunes people experiences when trying to find their loved due to their social status. It is also very clear the appearance and status was valued by those in power to the point of compromising the family's well being to an extent.

Captivating!
This was my first Eliza Hawthorne's book, and won't be my last. This is the first book in the Shadows of the Past series, a historical narrative and true crime mystery about the unsolved disappearance of Dorothy Arnold. This series is original and captivating. This is a gripping and interesting retelling of the story. Bruce Cannon did an excellent job bringing this story to life. Looking forward to listening to The Silent Witness, the next book in the series. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
