After learning so much in her book, I set up a one on one call with Suzanne and in just a few minutes she made suggestions I could implement immediately to begin setting myself up for a better life in retirement

Basic info; repeated sales pitches

I approached this book with curiosity, but unfortunately, my experience left much to be desired. Although the book has received numerous five-star reviews, I found it a basic, surface-level guide that often reads more like an extended advertisement for the author’s services than a truly informative resource.

The book offers practical, albeit generic, financial advice such as setting clear goals, creating a budget, managing debt, saving for retirement, and ensuring adequate insurance coverage. For someone new to financial planning, especially women who have been financially dependent for much of their lives, these suggestions may serve as a helpful starting point. The idea of looking into long-term care insurance was the one notable takeaway I personally gleaned. (However, I would have appreciated more detail.)

Although it is marketed for “women over 50,” it seems targeted toward women with minimal financial independence or knowledge — those unfamiliar with budgeting, investing, or credit management. For women who are lifelong entrepreneurs or already financially savvy, this book offers little new insight. This narrow focus limits the book’s usefulness.

The biggest problem, however, is the constant self-promotion. Nearly every chapter includes multiple invitations to visit Powell’s website and schedule a free consultation. Her anecdotes—designed to highlight success stories—read more like testimonials than actionable advice, as they often lack practical details. Instead of empowering readers to manage their finances independently, the book frequently funnels them toward hiring Powell for personalized financial planning. It becomes exhausting to wade through the self-congratulations and relentless marketing.: The heavy-handed sales pitch and repetitive self-promotion detract from the book’s overall value and are what caused me to give it two stars instead of three.
