Acerca de esta escucha

Ronald Hutton is known for his colorful, provocative, and always exhaustively researched studies on original subjects. This work is no exception: the first full-scale scholarly study of the only religion England has ever given the world, that of modern pagan witchcraft, which has now spread from English shores across four continents. Hutton examines the nature of that religion and its development, and offers a microhistory of attitudes to paganism, witchcraft, and magic in British society since 1800. Village cunning folk and Victorian ritual magicians, classicists and archaeologists, leaders of woodcraft and scouting movements, Freemasons and members of rural secret societies, all appear in this book. Also included are some of the leading figures of English literature, from the Romantic poets to WB Yeats, DH Lawrence, and Robert Graves, as well as the main personalities who have represented pagan witchcraft to the world since 1950.

Deep dive into pagan witchcraft

Cogent, excellent writing and analysis. This is a long book with detailed and comprehensive coverage and extensively documented. For those willing to make the effort well worth it. Very informative.

A Fascinating Book; Lackluster Reading

For all interested in the history of British paganism and ceremonial magic after 1800, there is no better book of which I know that can present the story and analysis of these subject’s than Prof. Hutton’s “The Triumph of the Moon.”

Regrettably, the reader of this book does not do justice to the work’s very interesting and extensively researched content. His voice is flat, mechanical, and oddly monotone. However the content of the book is worth enduring such a lackluster performance.

Excellent book, very bad reader

The book is fascinating. It is thorough and fair, and I learned a lot from it. Unfortunately, the reader was so bad that I often had to rewind bc I had spaced out due to the monotone, or alternatively, had to pause it so I could laugh at the stodgy grandpa voice the reader uses when reading the quotations from erotic pagan poetry from the 1800s. Despite how bad the reader was, the content itself was so interesting that I listened to all 28 hours of it and thought about every word.

Horrible narrator

I can't even say whether or not I like the book's content because the narration is so bad that it's hard to understand what is being said. This book is read in a very slow, robotic, monotone voice. It is horrible.

Fine book, terrible reader

A useful and informative book by Ronald Hutton, free of sensationalism.

The reader is monotonous.

A Thorough Treatment of Paganism-become-modern

This book would stand on its own as a genuine example of scholarship whether or not the reader had any interest in what we reckon as paganism/witchcraft. As an absolutely amateur lover of history, I blazed through this one and couldn't stop! I can't imagine having the stamina required to write this book but besides its value as history, it was just fun to read! I loved this one!

Good book split by the narrator.

The narrator was soooooo dull. Please re-record this and it would be such a more interesting listen.

Comprehensive and engaging

This history is a layered, textured, and engaging story of a religion that few outsiders understand. For those interested in the history of modern religions or pagan witchcraft, a must read or listen. IMO the narrator here is perfect for this material.

Great book, didn’t like the narrator

He didn’t do an unprofessional job or anything but I couldn’t stand his voice. I will listen again on Speechify where it will be less of a chore.
