Acerca de esta escucha
First published in 1997, The Story of Jane recounts the evolution of Jane, the underground group in Chicago that performed abortion services before the procedure was legalized. An extraordinary history by one of its members, this is the first account of Jane's evolution, the conflicts within the group, and the impact its work had both on the women it helped and the members themselves.
This audiobook stands as a compelling testament to a woman's most essential freedom - control over her own body - and to the power of women helping women.
A movie based on the book, titled This Is Jane, is being produced by Amazon Studios, with Michelle Williams attached to star.

Historia
For a long time, when people asked Dr. Meera Shah what she did, she would tell them she was a doctor and leave it at that. "I'm an abortion provider," she will now say. And an interesting thing started to happen each time she met someone new. One by one, people would confide that in fact they'd had an abortion themselves. And the refrain was often the same: You're the only one I've told. This book collects those stories as they've been told to Shah to humanize abortion and to combat myths that persist in the discourse that surrounds it.

Today's feminist movement has a glaring blind spot, and paradoxically, it is women. Mainstream feminists rarely talk about meeting basic needs as a feminist issue, argues Mikki Kendall, but food insecurity, access to quality education, safe neighborhoods, a living wage, and medical care are all feminist issues. All too often, however, the focus is not on basic survival for the many, but on increasing privilege for the few. Author Mikki Kendall takes aim at the legitimacy of the modern feminist movement arguing that it has chronically failed to address the needs of all but a few women.

Historia
In Ejaculate Responsibly, Gabrielle Blair offers a provocative reframing of the abortion issue in post-Roe America. In a series of 28 brief arguments, she deftly makes the case for moving the abortion debate away from controlling and legislating women’s bodies and instead directs the focus on men’s lack of accountability in preventing unwanted pregnancies. The result is a compelling and convincing case for placing the responsibility—and burden—of preventing unwanted pregnancies away from women and onto men.

Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, treating men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias in time, money, and often with their lives. Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates the shocking root cause of gender inequality and research in Invisible Women.

The reason why so many of us binge Manson documentaries by the dozen and fall down rabbit holes researching suburban moms gone QAnon is because we’re looking for a satisfying explanation for what causes people to join - and more importantly, stay in - extreme groups. What happens when a woman seeking an abortion is turned away? To answer this question, Diana Greene Foster assembled a team of scientists—psychologists, epidemiologists, demographers, nurses, physicians, economists, sociologists, and public health researchers—to conduct a 10-year study. They followed a thousand women from across America, some of whom received abortions, some of whom were turned away. Now, for the first time, Dr. Foster presents the results of this landmark study in one extraordinary, groundbreaking book.

Sex trafficking. We hear about it on the nightly news and in special interest stories from around the world, but it occurs daily in communities all around us. Every year, thousands of young women are forced into sexual exploitation. Most are under the age of 18. The damage this causes to their emotions and souls is immeasurable. But they are not without hope.

This is a no-holds-barred response to the liberal and conservative retreat from an assertive, activist, and socially transformative civil rights agenda of recent years - using a Black feminist lens and the issue of the impact of recent legislation, social policy, and welfare "reform" on Black women's - especially poor Black women's - control over their bodies' autonomy and their freedom to bear and raise children with respect and dignity in a society whose white mainstream is determined to demonize, even criminalize their lives.

So important right now... in 2022
I, like so many others, was devastated by the June 2022 Suprem Court ruling which overturned Roe v Wade. I then stumbled upon this book. I was born in 1973, so I've never lived, until now, during a time when abortions were illegal in America. This book was so insightful as to what that was like. I was also utterly gobsmacked to learn that there were many Baptist leaders supporting the woman's right to choose safe abortions. My, how things have changed. I found this book to not only be well written and an enjoyable listen, but also so very informative and inspiring.

4/5 Estrellas
Things have to be pretty terrible to force you to act.

Abortion is normal, and always has been.
This book illustrates everything you need to know about women and what they can accomplish. These women were remarkably responsible and professional. Their above and beyond care put the medical profession to shame. It still does. I thank the author for putting a spotlight on so much that’s been all but forgotten.

Essential history & organizing primer
You can listen to this as a history of women's liberation viewed through the lens of women banding together to provide safe abortion services, or you can listen to it as a primer on underground social organizing. It works on both levels. What is particularly important is that Kaplan pulls no punches dissecting both the group's successes and shortcomings.
This is literally unknown ground for most people, and Kaplan covers it thoroughly and with great sensitivity. If you are resolutely anti-abortion you can still listen to this with profit if you can get beyond your knee-jerk negative reaction to the topic.
Narration is clear and workmanlike -- does not either add or detract.

Important Womens & Healthcare History
The story of Jane - an underground abortion network pre-Roe v Wade - is important history to know. Some of the points that really struck a chord with me:
- Women’s bodies were long misunderstood by the medical profession and also by women themselves. Sadly, this is likely still true.
- When there is an issue that needs to be addressed, never underestimate the power of strong, organized women.
- Sex education that is factually based is an absolutely essential. Once again this is sadly lacking for many.
While at times I found the book repetitive, I ultimately decided that was necessary when laying out the history and progression of what occurred during the years of Jane. The women in this group absolutely amaze me for many reasons and are inspirational. If you are into history, particularly that of women and/or healthcare, this is well worth a read.

The story of underground organization Jane
This audiobook is about the secret underground group called Jane. They were a women member group that provided secret abortions to women and as they progressed offered it for free. The story starts good and gets into a repeating phase during the middle unit the end with a busy and legalization. I was surprised never having heard of Jane and the narrator is easy to hear and understand. A book that has unfortunately been relevant to today’s world
