Just so-so

This should have been wrapped up in about 4 less chapters. At the end I wanted to yell at the heroine - come on already! One of the male character’s voices is really irritating. I thought he was 90 but was actually 30

Communication Breakdown?

Let me be clear that I have really liked all of Grace Burrowes’ books. The Soldier has a nice storyline but the last half of this book was annoying as relates to the two main characters. Their total lack of understanding with one another was too hard to believe...and they kept sleeping with each other then giving grand farewells for no real reason. I enjoyed The Heir and The Virtuoso but The Soldier was hard to finish.

Loved this book!

The writer captures the internal conflict of love and keeps you on edge until the end. Great Book.

Can I throat-punch Emmaline? Sheesh!

Emmy is a petulant, whiny tease. I’ll never understand the concept that lack of communication/miscommunication/keeping secrets is preferable to confiding in a lover despite the drama/trauma it creates. It irritates me so much when a character causes so much needless drama and then whines and cries about it incessantly. The whole premise is just a tempest in a teacup. I was really looking forward to this one because Devlin St. Just was so broken and in need of love—but I was sorely disappointed. The story was a sweet one, I’ll give it that, and the men were swoon-worthy for sure. But it was just so boring as Emmy just made up such unnecessary crises for 11 hours. Talk about a mountain out of a molehill. There was no real problem that needed resolution—other than the fact that Emmy was such a childish, dramatic twerp. I would be hard pressed to say who acted more like a 6 year old, Emmy or Winnie. While I have enjoyed Grace Burrow’s excellent writing and lively characters, I have to say that after the first two books in this series, while not bad, they’re pretty much the same. For that reason, I’ve given this one only three stars. It’s not bad, per se, but it is quite lackluster.

Nice

I really liked this book because the hero was kind and gentle and had weaknesses, but was still very strong and manly. The heroine was also strong and beautiful and went her way. There's a little girl as well.

Could have been good

It started out excellently … I guess what annoyed me the most was the portrayal of little Win. She started at age seven but later in the book was six. I’ve raised seven children of my own and a girl that needs to dictate her letters at the beginning of the book to only a couple months later, writing epistles to a pen pal…. It just ruined it for me I guess. Then his “charge “ of what he did in the army to get out…. I thought was a bit ridiculous… sorry. Other than what I just stated and being a bit long for its content, it was good.

Unfortunate OMG book

Emmy, the heroine (?) in this book is so aggravating that I couldn't wait to get to the end. In fact, I fast-forwarded through the last 3 chapters. James Langton did a great job in narrating. Even though there were some strong, likeable characters, Emmy's stupid vacillation took away their strength.
A testament to Burrowe's character development & writing skills....she makes the characters seem real. So, I REALLY disliked Emmy.

Only okay

Any additional comments?

I liked Devlin in the previous book, but he seems to be a different character in this book. Previously he seemed more upbeat and witty. He now is brooding and seemingly helpless. I like the story of little girl, Winnie, who lived on Devlin's estate, I did not get too turned on by Emmie and I did not feel the chemistry between Devlin and Emmie. In fact, I was turned off by the idea of the two of them in intimate scenes. The narrator was good but the book was only okay.

How it dragged on & on

I liked the characters but was surprised at the outcome. Way too long & dragged out.
