Betty Pack was charming, beautiful, and intelligent - and she knew it. As an agent for Britain's MI6 and then America's OSS during World War II, these qualities proved crucial to her success. This is the remarkable story of this "Mata Hari from Minnesota" ( Time) and the passions that ruled her tempestuous life - a life filled with dangerous liaisons and death-defying missions vital to the Allied victory.

When a maid in the upper class Ellison household is strangled, Inspector Pitt is called in to investigate. He finds a world ruled by strict manners and social customs, where the inhabitants of the Ellison's neighborhood appear to be more outraged by the thought of scandal than they are by murder. Not Holmes, but good fun
As long as you don't expect this to be Sherlock Holmes, you'll probably enjoy it. I liked the basic idea the story is built around, and I enjoyed all the detailed adventures that took place along the way. I enjoyed the various characterizations, all the different settings, and the final outcome for the Romanovs. I was less pleased with the ending, but clearly the author plans another book or books, so I guess I can live with it. Holmes is too emotional and not sharp enough to actually be Holmes, but Watson is quite Watson-like (though too modern, clearly), and a better editor would have been a blessing, but overall I really enjoyed this as light and entertaining story telling. The reader was excellent. I look forward to the next installment.
