I don't have enough words to praise this book.

This is the most detailed and nuance work on the origins of the Civil War I have ever encountered. A must read.

Very Informative

In this day and age of vilification and judgmental dictums, this really should be required reading/listening for all who wish to understand how we got to where we are. Things are never as simple as they are billed and sold, and this book - while very lengthy - is quite thorough in explaining the many and critically important nuances necessary to truly understand how we came to Civil War. It is rather dispassionate and academic, but the points made are important to know about the many south’s that actually existed and were fused together imperfectly and retained many dissents.

Only complaint would be the narration speed (I had to go to 0.75) and the over-focus on certain states and the near absence of info on others (my own NC among the latter). But if you truly want to understand “how it came to this,” Freehling’s two works are essential.

Thorough, Thoughtful, Instructive.

The authors explanation of the road to civil war is detailed rigorous and fascinating. I enjoyed it a lot. For relevance today, the political and cultural imperatives for disunion provide a master class in how a highly motivated sometimes fanatical minority can bend the majority to its will. Let this story be a warning to us all.

Inspiring

This is the complex but essential story of secession. Wow, Freehling's words through Constant's voice unwind some of the difficult concepts of a diverse Antebellum South.

Lacks narrative clarity

I had to give up in confusion, which is a pity because there are important ideas in this book.
My biggest gripe is that the descriptions of prominent events become so convoluted that I ended up wondering who was who and who did what and which side they were on.
References to “northern southern states” and “southern northern states”, while useful in principle become mind boggling when he uses the concepts to describe the mindset of Buchanan - he’s a southern northerner with more in common with northern southerners than northern northerners - I think - and let’s not even speak of southern southerners or folk from the Midwest….
Finally he’s not above a bit of dimestore psychology- the account of the Brooks- Sumner incident is a case in point.
