BOOKER PRIZE WINNER • From the winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature, here is “an intricate and dazzling novel” (The New York Times) about the perfect butler and his fading, insular world in post-World War II England.

This is Kazuo Ishiguro's profoundly compelling portrait of a butler named Stevens. Stevens, at the end of three decades of service at Darlington Hall, spending a day on a country drive, embarks as well on a journey through the past in an effort to reassure himself that he has served humanity by serving the "great gentleman," Lord Darlington. But lurking in his memory are doubts about the true nature of Lord Darlington's "greatness," and much graver doubts about the nature of his own life.

Simply excellent

I first read the book one day in 1992. Listened to it on Audible this time. Both times I’ve throughly enjoyed the story. It’s an amazing reflection on life. It’s both beautiful and sad.

A peculiar effect

I confess I was expecting something different. It is a rather melancholic story, and, considering the effect it aims, it is a really good narrative. I recommend it because of its peculiar way of representing this melancholy.

Fabulous subtle story, great read.

If you liked Gentleman from Moscow, you will love this book. As in that book, all the real action happens off-stage but in this this book, the narrator of the story is unaware of the real story he is telling. It is magnificently subtle and engrossing. But you have to wait for it, this in not an action thriller but it is very deep.

Awesome writing and reading.

I was amazed by the way this story unfolded. The subtle and complex issues that were gradually revealed in the understated first person narrative were moving, sad, humorous. There are great takeaways too. The reader is perfect for the part. This is one of my new favorite books.

No Regrets

The moral I got out of the story was to live live without regrets, and the detail writing in this book I found to be excellent.
