Acerca de esta escucha
A few minutes later all four of us were sitting at a table in the far corner of the cafeteria with trays of food in front of us. There were perhaps half a dozen CIA types in the room, mostly sitting alone, spaced out around some thirty tables. It was a big room.
“Jees, Chris, how many people do you guys have in London?” I asked.
He shrugged.
“Don’t start thinking this whole building is CIA. We have liaison teams here from all three of the services. They do a lot of joint work with the Brits. We have military logistics camped here as well, plus HR for various bases that we share or lease around Europe. There’s a lot of folks here,” he said.
Just then a tough-looking guy, about six-two or so, strolled across. Black shirt, dark blue bomber jacket, and jeans. Not someone most folks would want to meet in a dark alley.
“Yo Chris,” he said, glancing at us. “Looks like you’ve let a couple of special forces types into the building. I don’t get the schoolgirl though,” he said, smiling.
He had quite a nice smile, so I didn’t get pissed. He stopped and looked hard at me, ignoring the others.
“Hmmm, quick revision. More killer than schoolgirl,” he said thoughtfully. He gave Chris a sharp look.
“WTF?” he asked.
Chris laughed.
“Jim Sternes, let me introduce you to the Taishan and her two bodyguards, Nyuna and Deodor. Guys, Jim is one of the best field agents I’ve ever worked with.”
“Taishan? What the fuck is that?” he asked, but in a pleasant tone, pulling out a chair and sitting down at my corner of the table.
“Jim just got in from quite a long stay in Istanbul. I don’t think he caught any of those TV reports about you, Jude,” Chris smiled.
He grinned at Jim.
“They’re not from around here,” he said, winking at me. His mood seemed to have gone around 180 degrees. “Jude was about to show me how she can do a photofit of three key tangos in a couple of minutes, right here on this laptop,” he said.
“Where was she, that she could spot three guys important enough to have the Head of London Station buy her brunch? By the way, Jude, this is a historic occasion. Chris never buys brunch or lunch. Tightest dude in the organisation,” he said smiling.
“Yeah, fuck you too,” Chris said, with less of a smile. “Anyway, she didn’t spot them. They’re part of a dirty bomb plot, along with that Pakistani we have down in the cells. She pulled the images out of his head.”
Sternes stuck a finger in his ear and stirred vigorously.
“Think my hearing’s a little fucked. I thought I heard you say she pulled images out of some guy’s head?”
He stared hard at me.
“What are you? A psychic? One who needs seriously heavy-hitters as bodyguards? Yeah lady,” he said, glancing at Ny, “I can see you are one very lethal soldier, gorgeous though you are.” He flashed Worth a sharp look. “I thought we investigated all that psychic shit back in the sixties and seventies and threw it out as a load of bollocks?”
I was starting to think of him as motormouth, he just didn’t stop. The guy was really wired. I liked him, though. Just for giggles, I shifted. His mouth actually opened in shock.
“Holy fuck!” he whispered. “What are you?”
“Jude’s a Warangi,” Worth said smugly. “From another dimension.”
“No shit, she sure doesn’t look like she’s from Kansas,” Sternes murmured. “Your eyes are amazing,” he said. “Okay, I’m cool with that. Now we have visitors from another dimension. Anyone know how that’s gonna play?” he asked.
