Acerca de esta escucha
Elise Hooper's debut novel conjures the fascinating untold story of May Alcott - Louisa's youngest sister and an artist in her own right.
We all know the story of the March sisters, heroines of Louisa May Alcott's Little Women. But while everyone cheers on Jo March, based on Louisa herself, Amy March is often the least favorite sister. Now it's time to learn the truth about the real Amy, Louisa's sister, May.
Stylish, outgoing, creative, May Alcott grows up longing to experience the wide world beyond Concord, Massachusetts. While her sister Louisa crafts stories, May herself is a talented and dedicated artist, taking lessons in Boston, turning down a marriage proposal from a well-off suitor, and facing scorn for entering what is very much a man's profession.
Life for the Alcott family has never been easy, so when Louisa's Little Women is published, its success eases the financial burdens they've faced for so many years. Everyone agrees the novel is charming, but May is struck to the core by the portrayal of selfish, spoiled Amy March. Is this what her beloved sister really thinks of her?
So May embarks on a quest to discover her own true identity, as an artist and a woman. From Boston to Rome, London, and Paris, this brave, talented, and determined woman forges an amazing life of her own, making her so much more than merely The Other Alcott.

Historia
The year is 2004: Lina Sparrow is an ambitious young lawyer working on a historic class-action lawsuit seeking reparations for the descendants of American slaves. The year is 1852: Josephine is a 17-year-old house slave who tends to the mistress of a Virginia tobacco farm - an aspiring artist named Lu Anne Bell. It is through her father, renowned artist Oscar Sparrow, that Lina discovers a controversy rocking the art world: Art historians now suspect that the revered paintings of Lu Anne Bell, an antebellum artist known for her humanizing portraits of the slaves who worked her Virginia tobacco farm, were actually the work of her house slave, Josephine.

Last is NOT Least
Wonderful story about the youngest Alcott sister. Had no idea she was/is a recognized artist, especially in France where her award winning works are found in museums. Look for Abigail May Alcott Nieriker. Thank you Elise Hooper for sending me to online encyclopedias, and informative art sites. 👏👏

Must read if you loved Little Women
This is a great novel relying on a lot of historical facts about the famous Alcott sisters. I thoroughly enjoyed it. The narrator is wonderful. You learn a lot about young women artists in 19th century America who went abroad to develop their skills.

Good story!
Great choice for our art museum's book club. Not only did we learn about the background of the famous author Louisa May Alcott, but we also read about the struggles of how an artist learns to develop her craft. It also examines the struggle that many artists & writers feel in choosing between painting/writing for art's/literature's sake & doing so for commercial reasons.

A good story but hard to get into
I enjoyed this story and learned quite a lot but found it very hard to get into. May’s story is tragic, but worthy of her own limelight. This is especially true of you’re a fan of Little Women!
