I Didn’t Want it to End

Maybe it was because I listened while visiting New Mexico, which is similar in so many ways to the Utah landscape described in this book, but the story completely enchanted me. I liked the main character immensely, and the supporting characters were well-drawn human beings who also won my heart in many ways. The narrator was pitch perfect for this book. I give the entire thing my highest recommendation

The desert drags you in

If, like me you enjoy books where the landscape is a main character, line up for this one. The story of Ben Jones unfolds gradually, the action happening on the long desert highway stealthily takes hold and the narrator is masterful. But it's the desert that holds you in its grip from start to end. It's all about the light. Very satisfying read.

Too Depressing by Half

I'm not quite sure I got sucked into this one, but I was intrigues with the idea of the desert as a character in the book, and I guess it sort of was, but in the end the whole thing was sort of a downer.

My first read of James Anderson, too listening to Kirby Heyborne. Kudos to each. Brilliant story. Good writing. Great reading performance. Thank you. On to Jame Anderson’s next book.

great narrator

loved this story and the narrator was perfect. Much better narrator than LullabyRoad. The story takes you away and when it ends, you will miss it.

Haunting story

Highly recommend this story. Great characters, well developed. They haunt you well after you finish the book.

slow but haunting

this story is very slow and quiet. it is written very well though, it has a very lingering presence for me. it's not boring, it's just quiet. peaceful. I very much like the main character. he is very human. the plot and characters are great.

Don't waste a credit

(3) strikes against this audiobook (1) the narrator / Kirby Heybourne has a flat tone in his reading that drains the energy out of the prose (2) preposterous plot ! Who cares about a million dollar cello ? (3) too many subplots, none of them very compelling (Ben is about to lose the lease on his truck, why is Claire hiding out from her soon-to-be ex-husband ). Honestly, this wasn't very good. I expected more but this didn't deliever.

Broken-hearted hokum

This story seals itself in a vault with no oxygen supply. Everybody's tragic, tragic, tragic. Everybody does the weird thing. We've got manly suffering and sphinx-like women. They suffer too. The writing's good and the narrator does what he can to sell this, but it's tiresome nonsense.

This Book is nothing like what was described

This description makes this seems like some heist adventure of a woman hiding in the desert with a stolen cello. The reality is this book is about a guy driving around in the desert tending to a bunch of meaningless sub-plots that are all every boring and uneventful in their own way. You keep waiting for the "dangerous men" but they never make an appearance. Absolutely NOTHING happens in this book except esoteric conversations with flat characters who never really come to matter. There's really no plot here. The narrator's droning voice only makes it worse.
