Talk about great timing. Rothbard's extraordinary book unravels the mystery of banking: What is legitimate enterprise and what is a government-backed shell game that can't last? His explanation is clear enough for anyone to follow and yet precise and rigorous enough to be the best textbook for college classes on the topic. This is because its expository clarity - in its history and theory - is essentially unrivaled. Most notably, he uses the T-account method of explaining the relationship between deposits and loans, showing the inherent instability of fractional reserve banking.

unpleasant narration
The content of the book is impressive in many respects. However, I think it is much more enjoyable and informative to read 'Human Action'. This book claims that 'The Mises Reader' is more digestible. I completely disagree. Indeed Human Action is a great classic while 'The Mises Reader' is a bit redundant in comparison. Moreover, the narration is very unpleasant. The tone of the narrator is not suitable for such a book. It irritated my ears. By contrast, 'Human Action' is perfectly narrated, and with certainly greater content requiring no prior reading (unlike 'The Mises Reader' claims to justify its contribution).
