International forces had a particularly strong impact on the history of the Middle East and North Africa. For instance, the discovery of oil in Iran in 1908 set in motion a series of alliances and conflicts ranging from the Suez Crisis of 1956 to the oil shocks of the 1970s to the 21st-century wars in Iraq and Syria.

Not only is this one of the best lectures on the Middle East but it is one of the best great course courses I’ve ever listened to. Great great work.

Very good book

I think this book is an amazing brief and great introduction to the middle East history

I wasn’t ready for it to end

There was so much information that was new to me in these lectures. Admittedly, I wasn’t well versed to begin with. So I suppose one could say that, for me, this was a perfect introduction to the Middle East.

The professor/lecturer is outstanding! He is engaging and knowledgeable. His enthusiasm for the subject is evident and infectious.

Overall, I am satisfied with this introduction to the region.
I’m definitely interested in learning more about its earlier history (which is covered in another course).

I highly recommend this 20th century review of the Middle East.

A great accomplishment

It is incredibly hard to teach the history of 20th century Middle East without making students dizzy, but the author succeeds, amazingly, managing to cover multiple countries while also addressing broader historical developments in the region. Are the author’s personal vignettes Also helped make the history seem more real.

I am becoming a massive fan of Eamonn! The course is very insightful and captures major turning points in the Middle East history in the last 100 years. The author is fair in his narrative and does not display any bias to one side over the other. Can’t wait for the next book!

Good backgrounder

Delivers what you want from Great Courses - the events described in context. I lived through a lot of this and heard a lot about the events but this series puts it all together without either over simplifying or taking an overbearing perspective.
