In "The Magical Truths of Phoenix Rising," 16-year-old Caroline Casey enters into the mystical world of elves, gnomes, fairies, and other magical creatures. Although Caroline would prefer to enjoy an ordinary summer vacation like an ordinary teenager, she chooses to use her special gifts to help the elves, who are in a war against evil shapeshifters. After Caroline travels through a mystical gateway to Ireland, she meets a young man whom she finds both annoying and intriguing. There is a surprise twist late in the story when Caroline and her friends gain help from an unexpected ally. Excerpt: I decided to remain close to the treehouses for the rest of my visit with the elves. While everyone else was busy with other things, I sat down on a bench beneath a treehouse. I reflected about everything that had happened the past couple of days. I was glad that Talbot had accepted the presence of Damien in the camp. They were getting along very well. I admired both Talbot and Damien. They had both traveled a difficult road to get here. Talbot continued to surprise me. He had many good qualities that I had not initially perceived. Talbot was good, brave, kind, and … My thoughts were interrupted when I realized that Talbot was standing about ten feet away looking at me. He had a bemused grin on his face. “What’s your problem?” he asked. “You are,” I retorted. “Why are you staring off into space?” “I often have deep thoughts about lots of important things,” I defended myself. “What were you thinking about just now?” “Here’s a better question,” I said. “Why were you standing there watching me like a crazy stalker person?” “Because I’m a crazy stalker person,” he grinned. “Well, anyway, we are in agreement about that,” I said, returning the smile. Sean approached us. “Caroline, Sagehorn wants you to help him with some project. He’s waiting for you in the central treehouse.” “Okay.” I stood up. “See you later, Talbot.” I climbed up the ladder to the largest treehouse, which served as a command center and a meeting room. As I entered the room, Sagehorn was placing a stack of folders on a large, oval table. Sagehorn turned toward me. “Caroline, thanks for coming so promptly. In about a half hour, a delegation of about twenty persons is going to arrive at our camp. Many of them are leaders of humans who have joined forces with the elves in the battle against evil. We are going to have an important meeting in this room.” “How can I help, Sagehorn?” I asked. For the next few minutes, Sagehorn explained the details of what he wanted me to do.
