How do we actually define reality?

Amusing, enthralling, enchanting, thought-provoking, and something that I will be left with for quite a while! What is believable? What is reasonable? Is it possible for whole shtetl to go unnoticed by history? And if so, how is the world convince that it really exists? And what is reasonable love?
I really enjoyed this book, which puts it at issue with many of the book club books which I have read. I'm afraid to say much more for fear of ruining it for other readers, but oh, it is totally engulfing and, as I say, thought-provoking. It is both worthwhile and wonderful :-)

Wonderful book!

This is a wonderful book that gives you great insight into the Jewish and Polish history and culture. I would highly recommend it.

A delight!

An accomplished first novel to be sure! It could have been edited a little more proficiently but the story was interesting, funny and sad. The narrator was very good except for a few mispronunciations of Hebrew words. Definitely recommend!!

it was so interesting!

I lived the description of the shtetl and the reaction Yankel has of the big city. it was uproarious how the secluded shtetl dwellers didn't believe the city people and vice versa. it also had some sad narratives of the haulocaust that gave me pause. Overall a very captivating story.

Story Ok-ish

A story about daily life in the hateful would have been better. That is what I was expecting.

Fascinating, twists and turns that I didn’t expect in the plot. I am glad that I read this with my book group, I can’t wait for our discussion!

Annatevka, meet Brigadoon

The reading began a bit too cutesy for my taste, as if Max Gross was channeling his interior Sholom Aleichem. But once he got into the story itself, Gross engrossed me! As well as being an engaging saga of romance and revenge, of coming of age and modernity through an heroic quest, the book brings up an intriguing proposition: How would individuals, and society, deal with a newly discovered isolated population, almost completely oblivious to the contemporary world? Well done.
PS: Mr. Cohen, the Audible performer, did a credible job, thank you. But to my ear, his Polish pronunciation was better than his Yiddish!

Deeply enjoyed this

Such an incredible premise that didn’t let us down. The narrative structure pulls some punches. Captures society and the twisted way that the oppressed become the villains brilliantly.

Not exactly original, but holds attention

Best part is ending that tells the story of the people and what maintained their identity through the ages.
