Alice Foley, a university graduate, about to take her initial steps into the workforce, is in search of accommodation that meets her budget. However, the rental market is difficult, and after a weekend of failed searching, despondent, she stumbles upon an enticing newspaper ad.
She meets with a Mr .McArdle, the owner of a fabulous Georgian townhouse in Dublin, who tells her he is seeking a lodger to keep him company. Everything about the deal appeals to Alice.
The following week, along with her mother. she turns up at McArdle's, where he entertains them to afternoon tea, and later on, an enticing meal.
However, Mrs. Foley has serious reservations. She tries persuading her daughter to quit the house, and continue her search elsewhere. However, Alice is adamant about staying.
