Great plot

The authors weave a great and realistic narrative where the intersections of the various crimes are never fully understood except by the reader. It was very humorous how they described the bumbling actions of the Stockholm crime squad and how they were tricked by the bank robbers.

One of the best in this series

Clever and amusing. Sometimes the social commentary gets heavy handed. Appreciated the ending! Justice done, mostly, though with an ironic twist.

My favorite of the Beck books so far

There's a lot to like about this one: Beck is back on the job after his previous injury, and he's working alone on case that previous members of the force have bungled. The rest of cast of characters are working (bungling) at trying to foil/capture bank robbers. As expected, Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö tell a good story that also funny and which contains a number of interesting characters. I'm giving the authors perfect marks although I'm not all that enamored with their social and political commentary, and I might have cut the last scene (as I felt it was overkill, and they had already done justice to that particular character's haunting bafflement already. This just cheapened it).

Good story if you overlook the communist rants

I really enjoy this series but every book seems to get more strident in it’s communist rants. Why do these people always overlook the history of the abuse and corruption if communist states?
Granted that capitalism and socialism also have their faults but few can boast of the brutality of the Soviets and Chinese. And what does that have to do with a good detective story anyway?

Misrepresentative Review

I almost chose not to read this excellent novel because Audible allowed a reader’s review to be displayed that totally misrepresented the contents. That reader was disturbed by the vulgar nature of the novel. There was absolutely nothing vulgar about this thoughtful crime novel. What it did include was a somewhat heavy handed criticism of Swedish society, but the critique was understandable considering the well known communistic tendencies of the authors.

Great puzzler, another good Nordic noir tale!

Sjowall & Wahloo wrote some really fine Nordic noir procedurals, and this is another one.

The Locked Room

One of the best crafted & narrated books from the famed Swiss authors. Provides us a sense of patient police
work & life in 1960s with daily insights. Cool audio detective noir too.

I already listened to this twice, it is so dense with characters, humor, plot details, environment, and commentary on the Swedish state. I will definitely listen to this again in a year or two because it is so great.

What other book might you compare The Locked Room to and why?

This is one of the best of the series by the authors. If you like Michael Connelly or Ed McBain, you will love this!

Wonderful, but better in print

These are very short concise books. Per and his wife Maj, wrote a series of ten, one a year in the late sixties and seventies. They are absolutely the best procedurals ever written. They capture a time of cynicism and doubt in the so-called Swedish society perfectly. They are best savored in print, the read version is too quick and does not well translate the atmosphere of these books.
