Joseph M. Marshall
Acerca de esta escucha
The myth of Deer Woman teaches a lesson on respect. The legend of Crazy Horse illuminates a lesson on humility. And the story of Eagle brings home the importance of compassion. These stories from the heart of Lakota culture and its survival, and their meanings, still resonate deeply with our daily lives.
Rich with storytelling, history, folklore, and Marshall's own personal experiences, The Lakota Way expresses the heart of Native American philosophy and the 12 core qualities that are crucial to the Lakota way of living: bravery, fortitude, generosity, wisdom, respect, honor, perseverance, love, humility, sacrifice, truth, and compassion.
Compelling and profound, The Lakota Way gives a fresh outlook to those searching for a new perspective on spiritual and ethical living.

Historia
Most of the world remembers Crazy Horse as a peerless warrior who brought the U.S. Army to its knees at the Battle of Little Bighorn. But to his fellow Lakota Indians, he was a dutiful son and humble fighting man who, with valor, spirit, respect, and unparalleled leadership, fought for his people's land, livelihood, and honor. In this fascinating biography, Joseph Marshall, himself a Lakota Indian, creates a vibrant portrait of the man, his times, and his legacy.

But Black Elk was not a warrior, and instead chose the path of a healer and holy man, motivated by a powerful prophetic vision that haunted and inspired him.

Widely hailed as a spiritual classic, this inspirational and unfailingly powerful story reveals the life and visions of the Lakota healer Nicholas Black Elk (1863–1950) and the tragic history of his Sioux people during the epic closing decades of the Old West. In 1930, the aging Black Elk met a kindred spirit, the famed poet, writer, and critic John G. Neihardt (1881–1973) on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota.

Dee Brown's eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the 19th century uses council records, autobiographies, and firsthand descriptions. Brown allows great chiefs and warriors of the Dakota, Ute, Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes to tell us in their own words of the battles, massacres, and broken treaties that finally left them demoralized and defeated.

Speaking from the cultural viewpoint of the Lakota of the northern Plains, the author discusses the evolution of native cultures to fit within the environment and adapt to it, as opposed to changing it drastically or wholesale to fit human needs and comforts. He suggests that changing our contemporary thinking in relating to the earth in a less harmful way does not mean a drastic change in lifestyles....

Social scientist Brené Brown, PhD, LMSW, has sparked a global conversation about the experiences that bring meaning to our lives - experiences of courage, vulnerability, love, belonging, shame, and empathy. For centuries the Túatha Dé Danann lived in peace on an island where time flowed more slowly and the seasons were gentle - until that peace was shattered by the arrival of invaders. The Gaels, the Children of Milesios, came looking for easy riches and conquest, following the story of an island to the west where their every desire could be granted. They had not anticipated that it would already be home to others, and against the advice of their druids, they began to exterminate the Túatha Dé Danann.

"Johnny Butler was just four years old when his Lenni Lenape "father," Cuyloga, spoke the words that siphoned out his white blood and put Indian blood in its place. Now the Yengwes, the white soldiers, were taking him back to his "true" home. Inside of him hate and anger spread like poisons. The Light in the Forest, by Pulitzer Prize-winning author Conrad Richter, will touch a new generation with its lasting truths.

Historia
When Zach Connors and his pa left their Kentucky homestead in the summer of 1824 to see the Rocky Mountains, he didn't realize he would never see his childhood home again or that he would find love, friendship, fame, and a new home in this wild and harsh wilderness. After a grizzly kills his pa, Zach struggles to survive a cold and brutal winter alone. After killing a rouge grizzly and fighting hostile Indians on his own, he becomes known as Grizzly Killer and is respected throughout the West. Along with his dog, Jimbo, whom the Indians call the Great Medicine Dog, he finds Running Wolf, an injured Ute warrior, and together they fight off a hostile war party. They rescue two Shoshone sisters from the brutality of a French trapper and take them as wives.

In 1836, when she was nine years old, Cynthia Ann Parker was kidnapped by Comanche Indians. This is the story of how she grew up with them, mastered their ways, married one of their leaders, and became, in every way, a Comanche woman. It is also the story of a proud and innocent people whose lives pulsed with the very heartbeat of the land. It is the story of a way of life that is gone forever.

You feel like you're at the camp
This is really a fascinating collection. The reader and author is an actual Lakota indian and historian, and the authenticity is both startling and refreshing. I really appreciated how you'll hear both the legends and the historical and philisophical meanings. I would have missed the meaning of a lot of the strange imagery and customs without that extra help.
You're not going to find vivid dramatizations or "Disney-fied" parables. Instead this is listening to a grandfather tell his grandfather's legends in a low and reverant voice. You'll feel like you're huddled around the campfire at the actual camp listening to this revered elder pass on these traditions. I haven't been so surprised and intrigued by a book on morals since Bill Bennet's "Book of Virtues". I'm going to have everyone in every generation of my family listen to this. I'd particularly recommend this to anyone taking a trip out west or a long ride with older children!

What If!!!?
Very good read(listen)!!
Made me think"what if everything had gone the opposite direction this whole time!?" every person that came here from a different country, land mass, Europe, etc had to either get on board with the native way of living or be slaughtered and/or rounded up and put on small chunks of shitty land called trailer parks and live below( well) be low the poverty level! I think that would make one hell of a movie!!!

Amazing book looking at the stories of the Lakota
It is nice to read a book about Native American stories that’s written by a Native American. It seems the stories were told to the author by his grandmother. Like so many of the Native American tribes in matriarch, for grandmother plays an important role in the storytelling of the tribe.
I found this book to be absolutely wonderful. It makes me want to find more stories from grandmothers of the native indigenous people of America

The Lakota Way was an engrossing history of the Lakota people.
A book worth hearing more than once. Joseph Marshall teaches about Lakota values through stories passed down through oral traditions. Each story focuses on traits and qualities that help us learn to be our best selves as huma. beings. Interspersed are pieces of Lakota history that exemplifies these traits...as well as historical events that shed light on the less than admirable domination of Native Americans by European settlers. I felt it was a fair and balanced retrospective.
