Alles ändert sich, als der kränkelnde Herrscher die Überquerung einberuft: ein todesmutiges Rennen zwischen seinen Erben, bei dem der Sieger den Thron besteigen und beispiellose Fähigkeiten erhalten wird. Dafür müssen sie nur das Ziel in der Wüste erreichen – und am Ende der Reise einem menschlichen Opfer das Leben nehmen. Während das ganze Königreich in Aufruhr ist, ergreift Zahru die Chance, ihr Schicksal für nur eine Nacht zu ändern und schleicht sich in den Palast, um einen Vorgeschmack auf das Fest zu bekommen. Doch der Plan entpuppt sich als tödlicher Fehler, als sie in eine Fehde zwischen den Thronerben verwickelt und zum menschlichen Opfer der Überquerung ernannt wird. Zahru bleibt nur eine Chance auf Überleben: Sie muss irgendwie herausfinden, wie man die gefährlichsten Menschen der Welt bezwingen kann.
