The wealthy life-long bachelor’s only sister had died eight years earlier. Before her husband had died, he’d left her with a daughter who was now almost seventeen years old. The girl couldn’t inherit until she reached eighteen and the precautions that Horace had included would prevent anyone from taking advantage of her until she came of age. He expected to make the two-hundred-mile trip to Lyon soon and after he read Horace’s will, he knew that it would be a difficult year for his client’s niece. The biggest threat would be from her stepfather, who also happened to be the county sheriff.

Story line

Loved it all, it was well written and loved how everything fit together. Had enough fights to make it good.

Depressing to think only 31 books remaining

Mr. Petit wrote 96 full length novels and this is number 65 (I believe). Severe withdrawal when the last one is recorded. I am always intrigued by how he came up with his plots. The protagonist solves problems but not with a gun as you've come to expect from the traditional shoot-em-up western. I'm only a third of the way through and the end is predictable but it's the journey that's entertaining. They're all great books and Michael Alan White is a superb narrator. All good things must come to an end but I'll prolong the inevitable when Mr. Petit's last book is recorded.
