After moving away for years an elderly woman returns to her long abandoned home on Cedar Street seeking to make peace with the tragic memory of her son Sammy mental illness and suicide decades prior Twelve year old Ellie notices the house suddenly shows signs of occupancy and sneaks inside to investigate meeting the white haired woman now living there The woman reveals she has come back hoping to make contact with her dead sons ghost in order to find closure
Ellie gets unexpectedly drawn into helping perform a seance ritual to summon Sammy spirit But this accidentally unleashes a powerful shadow demon that had fused itself to Sammy psyche festering unseen within his shattered mind
The demonic entity lashes out intent on claiming new hosts to anchor itself in the physical world In the climactic confrontation Ellie discovers the elderly woman was so obsessed with reaching her son that she made a misguided pact with the dark forces haunting the house
Putting herself at great risk Ellie fights to banish the demon while also coming face to face with Sammy himself still very much alive after all these years but with his sanity extremely fractured. In an act of self sacrifice Ellie saves Sammy remaining essence from possession destroying the demon for good

The experience restores the elderly mothers relationship with her ill but loving son finally bringing her the closure and peace of mind she had so desperately sought within the haunted homes walls
