In a voice that is flinty, real and passion-filled, Senator Harry Reid tells the tale of two places, intertwining his own story, particularly his early life of deep poverty in the tiny mining town of Searchlight, Nevada, "a place that boasted of 13 brothels and no churches", with the cautionary tale of Washington, D.C.: "If I can do nothing greater in this book than explain those two places to each other, then I will have done something important".

He is inspired by obstacles. Raised in a cabin without indoor plumbing, he hitchhiked 45 miles across open desert to high school. He worked full-time as a Capitol Hill policeman to get through law school, after the school refused him financial aid, telling him he wasn't cut out for the law. As head of the Nevada Gaming Commission, he led an unrelenting fight to clean up Las Vegas, despite four years of death threats and much worse. And in Congress, he's spent more than 25 years battling those who would take the country in the wrong direction: "The radical ideologues degrade our government, so much so that when they are in charge of it, they do not know how to run it". And always, it all comes back to Searchlight: "Who I am now, and what I am doing now, began in that town, with those people in those mines".

So many good stories in a well-lived and admirable life

Harry Reid was unique, and his life story is so interesting and his writing so vivid. The narrator struggled with pronunciation of names and oddly, the audiobook is not edited, so various times, you hear him re-read a line or two. It doesn’t really detract but it’s just odd that no one fixed it. Overall a great listen!

Great Book, but audio needs work

The story is great, but please go back and edit the audio. It repeats at times as well as has the narrator clear their throat.

Significant production problems

The chapters were mixed up, the narrator mispronounced many words and no one edited out the retries, when the narrator missed a word / reread a sentence or paragraph.Never had this happen before in an Audible book. These production problems made it difficult to listen to, despite the interesting story.

Issues with the playback

This playback really takes away from the content. One chapter was incorrectly used twice skipping chapter 7. Lots of repeats and mistakes by the speaker included.

Recording

Someone needs to edit this recording. It’s awful. The recording repeats itself. Super annoying. Harry Reid is an interesting person.

Worse audible I’ve ever listened to

This audible is the worse one I’ve ever listened to. The narrator speaks the wrong words often and instead of fixing it they reread that part over with the correct word. Also, there are 2 chapters that are exactly the same.
