Although the thoughts and ideas of Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, and Sigmund Freud have no doubt greatly impacted modern civilization, still many of their central doctrines remain shrouded in ambiguity, imprecision, and lack of evidence. The fact that they all shamelessly engaged in continuous revisions, denials, and withdrawals of multiple aspects and even key features of their core doctrines during their lifetimes makes concise and authentic descriptions of these doctrines exceedingly difficult, if not untenable. Yet bounteous homage, fervent respect, and near-sacred reverence of these thinkers tends to prevail in the hallowed halls of universities and across popular culture worldwide. This study seeks to explain this phenomenon by first identifying and discussing some of the primary logical and empirical flaws contained within each of these major systems of thought. Then it shows how this continuing widespread social acceptance is best understood by underlying philosophical principles: humanism, naturalism, and especially atheism. Acknowledging noteworthy gems of wisdom, it concludes by arguing that Darwin, Marx, and Freud individually and collectively did little more than construct theoretical systems that fueled the dominant philosophical principles of their time and ours. In the end, what these three great godless thinkers bequeathed modern civilization is chiefly the hideous legacy of atheism and the bondage of human intellect to material and biological chains.
