From New York Times best-selling true crime author John Glatt comes the devastating story of the Turpins: a seemingly normal family whose dark secrets would shock and captivate the world.

On January 14, 2018, a 17-year-old girl climbed out of the window of her Perris, California home and dialed 911 with shaking fingers. Struggling to stay calm, she told the operator that she and her 12 siblings - ranging in age from two to 29 - were being abused by their parents. When the dispatcher asked for her address, the girl hesitated. "I've never been out," she stammered.

To their family, neighbors, and online friends, Louise and David Turpin presented a picture of domestic bliss: dressing their 13 children in matching outfits and buying them expensive gifts. But what police discovered when they entered the Turpin family home would eclipse the most shocking child abuse cases in history.

In the first major account of the case, investigative journalist and author John Glatt delves into the disturbing details and recounts the bravery of the 13 siblings in the face of unimaginable horror.

John Glatt did an amazing job delivering this story. This was truly a heartbreaking story. My heart goes out to the magnificent 13!

Heartbreaking story

If you can get past the horrible narrator, most of the book’s ok. He talks in that same sing song cadence all thru the book. Read the prologue then skip book one, family history. That’s just useless information.

I knew nothing about this so I found it intriguing.

Bad narrator; good book

Loved it! Extremely detailed. Had some issues understanding the author. Had to rewind often.

Mind Blowing

This story is very interesting and it's good to hear all the details but the details are replayed over and over and over. Sometimes I thought I had accidentally went back to the last chapter because I was hearing the same thing so many times. You hear details when the story is originally told and then repeated again when the children tell the police their story, and then again when the judge is hearing about it at trial. I am sure there is even a few more times where it was repeated.

interesting but Repetitive

The narrator of this book has a pattern of inflection that makes it difficult at times to understand what he is saying. The volume of his speech drops off at the end of phrases and sentences and combined with his accent makes listening awkward.

Poor narration

I don’t know why I decided to listen to this book. It is profoundly disturbing and has little redeeming value. It confirms that abused children may become abusers themselves and that parents may sometimes inflict unbelievable acts of cruelty. It’s not new nor instructive.

A story of horror committed by abusive parents

Story - 3/5
Narration - 3/5

"The Family Next Door" by John Glastonbury is about a horrible couple who had too many kids, and treated them worse than good people treat their animals.

Recommendation - meh

Hell Will Be Too Good For These Two

The British accented narration was out of place for this story. Also, the narrator’s delivery manner was was short, direct and halting. Just a personal opinion that it didn’t fit the story.

Not sure the narration matched the story

This audiobook had good reviews and the content was good, but I listen while driving long distance and can not keep rewinding. I could not understand the authors thick accent and was very disappointed I couldn’t finish it. It would be great if someone did a voice over with no accent..
