Yet even though Cabal has risked such peril believing he understands the dangers he faces, he is still underestimating them. He is walking into a trap of such arcane complexity that even the one who drew him there has no idea of its true terrors. As it closes slowly and subtly around them, it may be that there will be no survivors at all.

I wish there were more. I have listened to this at least 4 times and it still delights.

More devilish charm

I really love the Cabal books and Horst plays off of Johannes' character really well. I feel like this was one of the best in the series. I wish I'd known about the print books before listening to this so I could fully appreciate Zarennya, whom I adore. While the series had to end eventually, I think it left off on a great note.

Looking Forward to More

I am amazed at the talent of the author and the skill of the narrator. Exceedingly well done.

Pretty fantastic series

I was only sad to see it end. Will definitely be picking up the short stories next.

Engaging

This is the 5th Cabal novel I have listened to, so it's clear that I must like the stories. I really love the characters, the wit and sarcasm. I found this book a little more difficult to follow than those previous and had to repeat some sections to be sure I hadn't missed anything. I hope there will be more Cabal installments. My only criticism is
the voicing of Horst in this recording. Johannes has a slightly Germanic accent, yet Horst his brother who presumably grew up in the same house sounds as if he were raised in the by Eliza Doolittle. very odd.

I'd like to meet them, knowing I'd have a blast w/ Darling Madame Zarenia, My new favorite devil. Appreciate His FEMALES R usually QUITE RESILIENT & seem 2 remain feminine. Thank you! I can't say anything bad about these stories, leave 1 thing. This my friends is the very last novel of the Brothers Cabal 😟😞😥 I'll b reading them again I know that. Thank U for reading this. 😸

I have a personal vendetta w this author

please....please.,..these are my favorite series. I’ve read each book at least three times. I BOUGHT THEM Legally!!!!!!! LEGALLY.

You can tell this author was a screenwriter. The characters feel alive and the actions are funny and I feel like I can physically picture everything they do. A lot of irreverent authors are real boys club members. The sexy Bond character who’s always funny and can save the day every time then gets the lady. Howard subverts the trope and over the five books you watch as Cabal becomes human again. My only complaint the whole series has been the lack of women but Howard really delivered in the fall of cabal. These books are so dear to my heart.

I need more:( I’ve read the novella. And I’m sad :( that his misadventures have ended.

the cabal brothers are German...

the cabal brothers are German and the narrator gave them British accents....loved everything else, but that detailed definitely irked me

Funny, Morbid, Horrific and Entertaining

I began listening to the Johannes Cabal, neuromancer, novels a few years ago and unusually for me, I ended up listening to them in order. While I think that with the assistance of the author's voice at times, this works as a stand alone novel.

Johannes Cabal's much loved wife has been dead but preserved by his necromantic arts since before the first book. He has been seeking through the entire series something that would allow him to bring her back to life. Now he thinks he has found a solution and takes off accompanied by his brother, Horst, a gentlemanly vampire that Cabal had wronged early on; the devil succubus Zarenyia, part woman and part spider with whom Cabal had earlier made a pact; a criminologist who Johannes met in the first novel, when he and Horst were running a traveling carnival and a witch.

I stayed up late to finish this occasionally startling the dog and cats by laughing out loud as the story spins on to its satisfying end. I have my fingers crossed that this will not be the last I see of these characters.

Narrator is Nicholas Guy Smith who has narrated most of the Johannes Cabal books and short stories and he, as alwaysl, does a stand out job.

I don't give a full five stars frequently but this book deserves it.
