Washington Irving's stories tend to become legends. "The Devil and Tom Walker" is one of those legends; its subject matter is human nature itself - goodness, evil, temptation, and fate. Cindy Hardin Killavey performs this story patiently, with the sweet, quiet intonation of a bedtime storyteller. The plot of the audiobook is Faustian - a man is dissatisfied with his life and makes a pact with the devil. However, Washington Irving's lively language disguises these deeper subjects in the pure joy of language.
