Acerca de esta escucha

After fourteen years of wrongful imprisonment, merchant sailor Edmond Dantès escapes his grim island fortress. With the promises of youth erased and his betrothed now married to someone else, Dantès lives for one purpose: revenge. Thanks to a benevolent prison confidante who reveals the location of a hidden treasure, Dantès buys his way, unrecognized, into society. Adopting a new identity as the Count of Monte Cristo, he sets out to destroy the rivals who framed him for treason. But the count’s obsessive quest could have irrevocable consequences for the innocent - and for himself.

What unfolds is an epic tale of breathtaking intrigue and righteous retribution from Alexandre Dumas, the nineteenth-century master of high adventure.

A True Classic of Literature

A fantastic story, worth listening to. The accents for each character made it very easy to identify them, but sometimes were too forced and overbearing.

Intriguing classic with perfect narration!

Guy Mott has with this performance become one of my favourite narrators. Works at normal and 2x speed for me and was a pleasure to listen to.

Great story, fair translation, bad narration

Regarding the story, it's great. It's a "page-turner" that I went back and forth listening and reading. It's thoroughly enjoyable. The translation is pretty good. It's more simplified than other versions.

Now, onto the narration. It was not good for this book. The narrator is engaging and can do a good amount of varied voices. The problem is that the accents are horrendous. He used all kinds of accents liberally. British, and absolutely horrendous French and Italian. It was just so bad that it's grating on the ear. The Italian sounded like he was trying to be Dracula. for such a long audiobook, choose your narrator wisely. Listen to the previews.

Upon My Word

Wow… I have seen the movie about 10 times, and it has been one of my absolute favorite movies for a long time, but this book has taken me to the heights of excitements and lows of despair and every emotion in between. It has been one of my most enjoyable fiction reads in a long time. I will probably listen to it again. I have never been so invested in a story. The narrator does an amazing job, probably could not have made it through the end without such superb narration. The characters have all been richly written.

better than I thought

While the novel was a bit wordy, overall it kept my attention. The first 20% of the book had me hooked and I wanted to know how Dantes would get revenge!
It was slow in the making but oh did he set plans. He was very unhappy though and I was worried how it would end.
Very intriguing story and I was invested in the characters 😊
Much better than I imagined it would be. Now I understand the fascination with this classic 😁

a true classic

WOW, 55 hours and I made it! I was a little intimidated by the length before starting the listen, but I knew it was going to be a great book. I hung in there as it is a great book and true classic.

Alexandre Dumas is an interesting story himself. His father was born in a French colony now known as Haiti. His paternal grandfather was a French general in the army and his paternal grandmother a slave. The grandfather to the father to France and sent him to a military academy then into the army. The author was born in 1802 just after the French Revolution ended but the strife between Royalists and Bonapartists continued for many years. He started out as a magazine article writer, wrote some plays before evolving into novels. He wrote many novels with adventure a common theme. He wrote this book from 1844-1846 and it was originally published as a serial over the to year period. In 1851 Bona artists once again fell out of favor and Dumas left France, first going to Brussels, then to Russia, then to Italy to live before returning to Paris for the last six years of his life.,

This story is a book for the ages. This book doesn't have technology as a resource but the strife between people trying to get ahead is still the same. I thought several times during the book how some of the situations could easily be translated into current day America.

A young sailor returns from a trading voyage where the captain got sick and died. The protagonist had done a great job of finishing the voyage and the owner tells him he will make him captain of the ship even though he is so young. That sets off a series of those around him being jealous of his promotion, his gal, and someone trying to rise to the top. He gets sent to prison without even know what his crime was.

He spends many years in a dark dungeon despairing over his life. He eventually meets another prisoner, a religious man, who educates him into the ways of the world. Through a stroke of luck, he escapades and sets out to revenge himself on those who put him in prison so unjustly.

It is a long, winding tale. The timeframe and setting are interesting.

Two words stand out at the end, wait and hope.

I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to tackle it.

Great story

Very fun, each chapter is a complete story so it’s easy to break up such a long book. Though early on the book is harder to get through and the story progresses much fast towards the end so don’t get discouraged if you get confused with characters and who’s who, typically they get reintroduced and explained as they become relevant to the plot.

Long and enjoyable!

This book took me by surprise on how long it is ( I had not looked at that before I started) Although it was a time commitment, it was worth every second! I was on edge when I had to stop each time. I drive a Jeep and had the doors and side off with this blaring on my speakers. Haha!! I got some looks, but didn't care... It was not like the movie, but if you "read into" movies, like I do, you will not be disappointed by the detail given.

Story goes on and on and on

The story does not include the Count very much. Author spent way too much time developing secondary characters’ stories.

Can’t believe the word sepulcher was mispronounced several times.
