In the spiritual teachings, Michael LaFond finds surprising parallels with shamanism as described by Carlos Castaneda.
Jesus Christ and John the Baptist knew what they were doing. They were changing Jewish practice and belief, so it is accurate to say they were creating a new religion, although they would have claimed to be perfecting Judaism. While the explanation of their activity may have changed over time due to changes in events and situation, the core message remained the same: Jesus was the Messianic king of Israel. However, the conspiracy strove also towards ancillary goals of the spiritual empowerment of the followers and the prevention of violence through the teachings of Jesus Christ.
