By approaching the Bible from an inclusive perspective, we seek not only to counter readings that have perpetuated hatred and oppression but also to reclaim the text as a space for inclusion, love, and diversity. This introduction aims to present the primary approaches this book will adopt in analyzing and reinterpreting biblical scriptures. It is an analysis that respects the importance of the stories, myths, and teachings that have deeply influenced people’s faith and lives, while also acknowledging the richness of human plurality reflected—although often hidden—within these narratives.

Scripture and the Construction of Gender
Before embarking on a detailed examination of the Bible, it is crucial to recognize that modern concepts of gender and sexuality did not exist in the ancient world as we understand them today. The Bible, like any historical text, is rooted in the cultures and societies in which it was written. Contemporary views on gender and sexuality are the result of centuries of cultural, scientific, and philosophical evolution. This means that the language and power structures within the biblical text reflect a world profoundly different from our own.
However, it is precisely through an analysis of these differences that we can find ways to reconcile scripture with the present-day diversity of gender and sexuality. In reinterpreting biblical texts, the challenge lies in acknowledging that, while the text arises from a specific historical context, its teachings and messages are neither immovable nor static. Through inclusive reading, we can find pathways toward affirming and accepting diversity.
In this book, we will explore how patriarchy and heteronormative standards have shaped traditional readings of the Bible, while also identifying moments of ambiguity, fluidity, and diversity that have been historically ignored or suppressed by conservative interpretations. The creation narrative, figures of authority within the Bible, stories of love and sacrifice—all of these can be revisited and recontextualized.
