The vast expanses of southern Russia and the Ukraine provided the Eastern Front arena where the armies of Third Reich dictator Adolf Hitler and Soviet dictator Josef Stalin wrestled lethally for supremacy in 1943. Endless rolling plains - ideal "tank country" - vast forests, sprawling cities, and enormous tracts of agricultural land formed the environment over which millions of men and thousands of the era's most formidable military vehicles fought for their respective overlords and ideologies. The winner could expect to reap very high stakes indeed. If Hitler's Wehrmacht smashed the Red Army, he could no longer hope for a lightning conquest, but the Fuhrer could expect the Soviet strongman to sue for peace on terms advantageous to Germany. If, conversely, the Red Army triumphed, Stalin could continue rallying the Soviet Union and move closer to expelling the loathed "Nemets" invaders from Russian soil - and perhaps carve out a Soviet empire in Central Europe.

Pronunciation

The story was detailed and very interesting. However, everything in German was pronounced wrong. I had to stop listening because it was so bad.

enjoyed this book. the narration . excellent.

great book would recommend it two others the narration of this book was excellent I felt like I was right there with the soldiers on the battlefield. 😊😊

You had one job

Let's say you are an audio book narrator. Your job is to ensure that you speak clearly AND accurately. What is it with these clowns that don't even bother to confirm their pronunciation? About the only German name not mispronounced was Hitler. It is like nails on a chalkboard to hear names as simple as Walter Model butchered every time (pronounced mah-del).

Very little new or analyzed material

I read this book with the hope that I would gain additional or new insight into one of my favorite battles of all time. Bowen, that was not to be the case.

While I enjoyed the book, they're wss very little that was different from any of the previous books written by authors on the subject. Charlie River Editors doesn't go into depth as to when, where and why of the battle, they men or material used.

I wanted to know about the training of the two combatants; the Germans and Soviets. I wanted to understand about the terrain around the battle. But, this was not the case.

If you have little to no knowledge off the Battle of Kursk, you'll love this book. But, anyone that had more than a basic understanding of Kurdk, you will not find out anything revealing.
