Es ist der Sommer 1969, Rom ist heiß und aufregend, voller Glamour und Intrigen. Teddy Carlyle ist mit ihrem neuen Ehemann, der in der amerikanischen Botschaft arbeitet, nach Italien gekommen. Nach einigen Jahren mit schlechten Männern und schlechten Entscheidungen will sie nun ein neues Leben beginnen. Sie schwört sich, eine gute Diplomatengattin zu sein: glamourös, diskret, perfekt gekleidet und unerbittlich höflich.
Teddy gelingt es zunächst gut, sie schließt neue Bekanntschaften auf Partys und Empfängen, ist glücklich mit ihrer kleinen Tätigkeit in der Botschaft. Doch nach nur wenigen Wochen, am 4. Juli, explodiert ihr neues Leben zusammen mit dem Feuerwerk am Himmel. Ein Fotograf schießt ein kompromittierendes Bild von ihr und dem amerikanischen Botschafter, nur wenige Augenblicke nachdem sie einen Mann aus der dunkelsten Ecke ihrer Vergangenheit auf der anderen Seite des Raumes gesehen hat. Beides Beweise für ihre Verkommenheit und Grund genug für ihre Familie, sie aus dem Verkehr zu ziehen – wie einst ihre lebensfrohe Tante Sister.
In all diesem Chaos fasst Teddy einen Entschluss: Sisters Schicksal wird nicht ihr eigenes sein!
