Special Yathavan Ansari schickt ein Marine-Team nach Afrika. Dann meldet sich MARS-Control nicht mehr... "Der Hügel der Antilopen", bemerkte Will, der aus dem Fenster die nahende Stadt erkannte. "Was?" "Das bedeutet das Wort Kampala", klärte Will den Colonel auf. "Ich habe mich ein wenig schlaugemacht. Zur Blütezeit hatte die Hauptstadt Ugandas über anderthalb Millionen Bewohner, mit Umfeld drei Millionen. Man rechnete, bevor der Krieg und das Klima kamen, bis 2100 mit über 40 Millionen." "Und jetzt?" Will sah nach unten: "Wohl niemand mehr." Die ehemalige Stadt sah aus wie eine Trümmerwüste. Über fast 200 Quadratkilometer erstreckte sich eine verwüstete und bombardierte Stadt, an einigen Stellen zugeweht vom Sand. Überall eingestürzte Häuser, Betonteile und Stahlarmierungen. Einzelne Hochhäuser waren zum Teil stehengeblieben und reckten wie flehend ihre Mauern gleich Fingern in die Höhe. Nirgendwo, und das war das Unheimliche, war eine Bewegung zu erkennen. Die Stadt wirkte wie tot. Drei Handlungsorte: ERDE, MARS – der 'Rest' vom Universum – irgendwo weit draußen.
