The book explains a trauma-aware approach that leads to healing and hope in the interesting back and forth of questions and answers and stories shared by Perry and Oprah.
What's in it for me and why is it important?
Everyone has some form of trauma in their lives. Trauma is not just about abuse or even any specific action. Trauma is about how we process or perceive an event in our lives. What is a trauma for one is not the least bit traumatic for another. We must understand how we process events in our lives and why.
You'll soon discover....
Each of us develops a stress response over time, and this response can cause us to display different behaviors, some healthy, others maladaptive. When a person is overly stressed, the brain processes at the lowest levels to survive, even when the stressor perceived is not real. Our brains are highly malleable, especially when we are children, but you must start retraining at the level someone is functioning, not their chronological age. Trauma-aware training for organizations and personnel is just a start in helping people struggling to function in their lives.
