I Anna Sewells klassiker fortæller hesten Sorteper om sit liv i England i 1820’erne. Sorteper oplever både at bo hos mennesker, der holder af ham og passer på ham, men han prøver også, hvordan det er at have ejere, der ikke tager sig ordentligt af deres heste. Historien satte som en af de første bøger et tiltrængt fokus på dyrevelfærd. Anna Sewell (1820-1878) var en engelsk forfatter og kvinden bag en af de bedst sælgende bøger nogensinde "Black Beauty", der på dansk både er udkommet under originaltitlen og som "Sorteper". "Sorteper" var oprindelig skrevet som et værk til mennesker, der arbejdede med heste, og bogen lægger i høj grad vægt på dyrevelfærd og respekten for både mennesker og dyr. Anna Sewell skrev bogen, mens hun var sengeliggende efter længere tids sygdom, og hun døde kun fem måneder efter bogens udgivelse. Selvom Anna Sewell ikke oprindeligt skrev "Sorteper" til et børnepublikum, regnes bogen i dag som en klassiker inden for børne- og ungdomslitteraturen.
