Acerca de esta escucha
Sons and Lovers, Lawrence's third published novel, was written by the author at the height of his literary powers. The story of class differences (the relationship between a middle-class woman and a miner) in the tough world of coal mining brought a refreshing realism to literature. It remains a challenging text and is studied widely. It is particularly effective on audiobook in the hands of Nottinghamshire reader Paul Slack.

Historia
Lawrence explores love, sex, passion, and marriage through the eyes of two sisters, Gudrun and Ursula Brangwen. Intelligent, incisive, and observant, the two very different sisters pursue thrilling, torrid affairs with their lovers, Rupert and Gerald, while searching for more mature emotional relationships. Against a haunting World War I backdrop of coal mines, factories, and a beleaguered working class, Gudrun and Ursula's temperamental differences spark an ongoing debate regarding their society and their inner lives.

Historia
The story of Lady Chatterley and her love for her husband's gamekeeper outraged the sensibilities of Edwardian England. Lawrence had already been dismissed as a purveyor of the obscene for the attitudes to sex that he had shown in The Rainbow, which had been fiercely suppressed on its publication in 1915. Chatterley, written in several versions around 1928 in Italy in the final part of Lawrence's life, was a deliberate choice on the author's part to address sex head on.

Historia
With The Way of All Flesh, Samuel Butler threw a subversive brick at the smug face of Victorian domesticity. Published in 1903, a year after Butler's death, the novel is a thinly disguised account of his own childhood and youth "in the bosom of a Christian family." With irony, wit, and sometimes rancor, he savaged contemporary values and beliefs, turning inside-out the conventional novel of a family's life through several generations.

The Sound and the Fury is the tragedy of the Compson family, featuring some of the most memorable characters in literature: beautiful, rebellious Caddy; the manchild Benjy; haunted, neurotic Quentin; Jason, the brutal cynic; and Dilsey, their black servant. Their lives fragmented and harrowed by history and legacy, the character’s voices and actions mesh to create what is arguably Faulkner’s masterpiece and one of the greatest novels of the twentieth century.

Set in the fictional South American country of Costaguana, Nostromo explores the volatile politics and crippling greed surrounding the San Tomé silver mine. The story of power, love, revolutions, loyalty and reward is told with richly evocative description and brilliantly realised characters. But Nostromo is more than an adventure story; it is also a profoundly dark moral fable. Its language is as compellingly resonant as the sea itself; the characters absorbing and complex.

In this incandescent novel, V.S. Naipaul takes us deeply into the life of one man, an Indian who, uprooted by the bloody tides of Third World history, has come to live in an isolated town at the bend of a great river in a newly independent African nation. Naipaul gives us the most convincing and disturbing vision yet of what happens in a place caught between the dangerously alluring modern world and its own tenacious past and traditions.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the original publication of this runaway best seller, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, along with Grass' publishers all over the world, offer a new translation of this classic novel. Breon Mitchell, acclaimed translator and scholar, has drawn from many sources. The result is a translation that is faithful to Grass' style and rhythm, restores omissions, and reflects more fully the complexity of the original work. After 50 years, The Tin Drum has, if anything, gained in power and relevance.

Not my cup of tea, lad
This would have to be one of the most difficult novels to perform - the deeply personal and intimate nature of the narrative at some moments almost defies verbal expression. Paul Slack struggles manfully, suffusing his reading with emotion, and does keep you in the moment most of the time. I did feel he could have put more effort into differentiating the character voices - the only true distinction he managed, i.e. rough vs refined working class, was by accent, but during some dialogues between Paul and his lovers I was at a loss who was speaking any given line. I can't really say it sustained my interest, but whether Slack or Lawrence is to blame I can't say with certainty. Lawrence has his lyrical moments and can summon up a memorable image but the lack of much in the way of incident or humour for long stretches took a toll on my attention after a while. I would compare it to Wuthering Heights for its relentless intensity, which is a recommendation of sorts I guess. To be tackled with caution.

a very rich experience!
Would you consider the audio edition of Sons and Lovers to be better than the print version?
i do not compare audio books with printed versions. imaginations are very individual. i must say that the performance of this book by Paul Slack was quite excellent.
What did you like best about this story?
the story unfolds slowly yet in such rich verbiage that every passage is a fulfilling experience in itself. the writing is lush without being pretentious and Lawrence's descriptions of the inner workings of the characters are incomparable.
Which scene was your favorite?
i found the modest yet intensely complex love scenes to be particularly touching.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
my experience of this this read was transportive. i felt inside of the story, the settings and the characters.

An excellent version
I heard the BBC radio dramatisation of "Sons and Lovers' many years ago. Paul Slack's reading made it all come back.
I'm disappointed that Audible doesn't have more work by him.

a few glitches with the recording
There are a few glitches with this recording- a handful of passages are repeated. However, I enjoy Lawrence and I thought the narrator did a wonderful job- accents were very well done and characters were easy to distinguish.
