Trading one trap for another darker one, she is stuck between trying to avoid her husband’s violent moods and taking an unknown risk by grabbing her children, running, and trying to find a way forward.

As Jenny’s daughter, Charlie, comes of age, she strives to understand the choices her mother made, to confront the traumas that shaped both their lives, and to overcome any limits the forces of the past have imposed.

Poor choices lead to difficult life.

I picked this book from the recent big sale. I listened to it all because the narrator was great. I chose the book because it was about Appalachia, a subject I care about. But this story gave little feeling about the place. This horrible story could have been set anywhere. Generations of abusive parents and mean people populate the story. I had no empathy for any of the characters. This was just an endless recital of long days of boredom and abuse. The author was stuck on smoking. There was smoking on nearly every page. Boring.
