3.5 rounded up to 4. Started off good, but dragged

The first two hours had me excited until the middle part came. Hours went by without anything happening to the main characters. The cop in the jumpsuit reveal at the ending was no surprise. I knew it was him when told his two subordinates to investigate John. Even when he killed that reporter in the middle of the book. Raul had secrets throughout and the girl he grew up with was too fancy to live in a border town with minorities. Anywho, this book had branching paths that seem to go nowhere. The kid was hiding in plane sight, Raul was working against the people I believe he hired through Piper to find the kid. I'm spoiling too much, overall a 3.5, the narration is the only reason why it's a 3.5. Story was ultimately none sense with the possibility of Piper expecting as the cliffhanger.

Good Follow Up to The Contractors

I would guess that the negative reviews for this book come mostly from those who haven't read or listened to The Contractors, the first book in this series.

An understanding of John and Piper's relationship is pretty foundational to the story. This book carries forward the theme of two people with damaged pasts trying to get along.

The story was good. I listened to this book, and I have to say Luke Daniels is a master at reading these stories. No confusion about who is speaking. He is a treasure.

Serious Racist Undertones

Full disclosure, I did not finish this book. In chapter 6 the author refers to Hurricane Katrina EVACUEES as refugees. Really? In 2014 white people are still referring to the CITIZENS leaving New Orleans due a devastating storm as REFUGEES. That was it for me. I was already getting racist undertones from the beginning of book. I couldn't go any further.
