"Fra tre giorni ci vai da Carmine, a papà?". Una frase, solo una frase, e nel cuore di Pietro ricomincia a pulsare un'attesa carica di angoscia segreta. La sua normale vita di bambino, fatta di caccia alle lucertole assieme all'amico Luigi e viaggi fantasticati sull'antica macchina di papà, si interrompe di colpo. La legge del padre si fa pulsante e minacciosa: porta i segni di una violenza in grado di segnare pesantemente il corpo di sua mamma e talvolta anche il suo. Loro devono soltanto obbedire.
E così Pietro si trova a dover portare una busta sigillata a Carmine, un amico del padre "dal volto bucato", un poco di buono diremmo noi. Ma Pietro è solo un bambino, sa solo d'istinto che quella persona lì non è una bella persona, ed è una verità che gli sale dalla pancia, ingovernabile. Ma perché suo papà non gliela porta lui direttamente quella busta all'amico? Il mondo dell'infanzia innocente si scontra con un mondo di adulti, governato da una logica di guerra. E Pietro aprirà proprio quella busta.
