Acerca de esta escucha
The moving lifetime relationship between a father and a daughter, seen through the prism of global immigration and the contemporary refugee experience.
An Iranian girl escapes to America as a child, but her father stays behind. Over 20 years, as she transforms from confused immigrant to overachieving Westerner to sophisticated European transplant, daughter and father know each other only from their visits: four crucial visits over two decades, each in a different international city. The longer they are apart, the more their lives diverge, but also the more each comes to need the other's wisdom and, ultimately, rescue. Meanwhile, refugees of all nationalities are flowing into Europe under troubling conditions. Wanting to help, but also looking for a lost sense of home, our grown-up transplant finds herself quickly entranced by a world that is at once everything she has missed and nothing that she has ever known. Will her immersion in the lives of these new refugees allow her the grace to save her father?
Refuge charts the deeply moving lifetime relationship between a father and a daughter, seen through the prism of global immigration. Beautifully written, full of insight, charm, and humor, the novel subtly exposes the parts of ourselves that get left behind in the wake of diaspora and ultimately asks: Must home always be a physical place, or can we find it in another person?

Historia
In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet - sensual, fiercely independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair, and are soon cloistered in a premature intimacy by the unrest roiling their city. When it explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors - doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice.

Historia
Growing up in a small fishing village in 1980s Iran, 11-year-old Saba Hafezi and her twin sister, Mahtab, are fascinated by America. They keep lists of English vocabulary words and collect contraband copies of Life magazine and Beatles cassettes. So when Saba suddenly finds herself abandoned, alone with her father in Iran, she is certain that her mother and sister have moved to America without her. Bereft, she aches for their company, and for the Western life she believes she is being denied. All her life she had been taught that "fate is in the blood", which must mean that twins will live the same life, even if separated by land and sea.

As a member of the strictly religious Satmar sect of Hasidic Judaism, Deborah Feldman grew up under a code of relentlessly enforced customs governing everything from what she could wear and to whom she could speak to what she was allowed to read. Yet in spite of her repressive upbringing, Deborah grew into an independent-minded young woman whose stolen moments reading about the empowered literary characters of Jane Austen and Louisa May Alcott helped her to imagine an alternative way of life among the skyscrapers of Manhattan.

A stunning debut novel about a young undocumented Peruvian woman fighting to keep her family afloat in New York City. Ana Falcón, along with her husband, Lucho, and their two young children, has fled the economic and political strife of Peru for a chance at a new life in New York City in the 1990s. Being undocumented, however, has significantly curtailed the family’s opportunities: Ana is indebted to a loan shark who calls herself Mama and is stretched thin by unceasing shifts at her factory job.

Reseñas de la Crítica
"[Nayeri's] exploration of the exile’s predicament is tender and urgent." (The New Yorker)
“Rich and colorful...[Refuge] has the kind of immediacy commonly associated with memoir, which lends it heft, intimacy, atmosphere.” (New York Times)
“[An] urgent, resonating contemporary story, highlighting today’s scattered, displaced, lost, all-forced-to-be refugees in search of the titular refuge... Nayeri carefully illuminates the plight of the ever-searching, never-belonging global wanderer.” (The Christian Science Monitor)

an outstanding work of fiction
Loved it from start to finish, especially the two character voices of father and daughter. Rarely do I want to listen twice to a book but this book offers so much more. I will certainly enjoy returning to the characters and their contrasting experiences as refugees.

an insightful and personal view of a Refugee
I head about this book listening to NPR and started the book to gain insight on what it's like to be a political refugee. I found that it was a very personal account of life after being uprooted but in a very relatable and profound way. The author is very good at not just telling the story but telling the underlying thoughts and feelings of the characters; what it's like to be them. It had a beautiful way of describing scents, tastes, feeling, and seeing. Also the relationships in the book were honest in a way rarely seen. I would recommend this book. I enjoyed the audio recording too and think both voices were really understandable and pleasant to listen too.
