Acerca de esta escucha

Deep Space One was sent on a one-way mission to save the people of Earth. Their mission was to find a new home for the survivors of a dying planet. They trusted each other and in the importance of their mission. What they found out en route was not expected, and the information they learned changed everything for them and the people they left behind.

Good story with an interesting ending

I liked the story and the character development. The ending was good but I would have liked to have learned more. It seemed a little front heavy with a lot of time spent on background and relatively insignificant things leaving only a small amount of time on the actual story at the end.
The narration was a little flat (sorry Ray) and I found myself drifting sometimes.
I have listened to a few of his books and always found them worthwhile, just maybe get a narrator next time.

Entertaining Short Sci-fi Story

This is a near future science fiction story with realistic, detailed fact based science. The characters are relatable and interesting and the problems and conflicts the crew face are plausible. The story moves along at a good pace with an intriguing mystery, suspense and ironic plot twists. I enjoyed the story. I was provided a free review copy if this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this unbiased review.

Great listen!

This was a great story. I was so into it I couldn't stop listening until the end. The main character was likeable and the setting was rich with detail. Even the narration was good giving the story a flavor one couldn't just stop listening to. Again great story.

Migration from Earth or Bust

Interesting idea for the migration from Earth to another planet.
Narrator is the author so take it with a grain of salt.
Twist ending is decent.
Characters are developed for a short story - so not bad.
He paints an interesting picture of the spaceship used.
He does a great job talking about the politics for migration and the complications it could cause.

Red Dots or Blurred Vision

I am used to reading long novels rather than short stories so the pacing of this short story seemed off to me. The beginning jumped around a bit introducing people that I had trouble remembering what the relationship to the story was. That means that either there was not much to remember and correlate to the rest of the story or I am just getting old and can’t remember that long.

Overall I thought this was a good story line that did not take too long to become involved. There is lots of science in here as a part of the story that does not seem too much as an add on. Ray can be relied on to have the science to make his story believable.

However, I have one major issue with this short story… It was too short! The story ends very abruptly and literally on the words of a major revelation. Cliffhangers work in soap operas (or in this case Space Opera) or in old serials where you had to come back the next week at “The Same Bat-time, Same Bat-Channel” to find out if the hero survives. They have no place in short stories that are generally stand alone and even when collected in a “Short Story Collection” only have a relation to each other rather than a continuation of the same story. Asimov’s “Robot” short stories are an excellent example of this.

This is one of those stories that are “Read by the author.” I can’t decide if that is a good thing or a bad thing in this case. First off he did a respectable job telling the story. What I can’t decide is if the reader knowing the story and how it should sound made the story better or if a better character reader might have brought the story to life a bit better. Either way, it is what it is. I do recommend this as a quick read as it has a good story to tell that is easy to get into and “read by the author” is certainly not a downside for this story.

Good sci-fi short story. I liked this selection!

--no spoilers--
This was a great idea for a story that was well written and performed. _If_ you're looking for some good Sci-Fi and are OK with it being on the short side, I whole-heartedly recommend this!
Sometimes with Audible, stories can run on for 12 or more hours. I am rarely in a position to listen for 12 hours straight and since I don't always have a long commute, it can be a challenge (1) getting into a story and (2) finishing it. No so with this title. My only complaint (and it's minor) is that there's ample material for a follow-up and follow-on story after this and I hope the author considers that possibility. I could see this being part of a three of four part short story series -- a part on Earth, a part at the destination, and maybe a part still farther down the road.
Another aspect that I liked was that the characters were realistic, had some depth, and drove the story. You don't have much time with a short story format to develop characters in detail. I felt the author did a great job in that regard and left me with a good understanding of who they were, what they valued, and why they were there.

Thoroughly enjoyable

I really enjoyed the story. It is worth the time to listen. Mr. Perreault's narrative of his own words is a very nice touch.

Decent Sci-Fi short story

Red Dots is a decent Sci-Fi short story, that has a couple of plot twists that will keep you guessing. The book has a slow start, due to the author describing and explaining all the engineering/Sci-Fi terms and what not early, but once I got into it, I really enjoyed it. I like the direction that the author is taking with this book and I look forward to listening to the next one. This is the first book that the author has narrated, and it shows. Many of the voices for the characters are similar, or only slightly varied. if you’re not actively paying attention to the story, you may lose track of who is talking during dialog heavy parts. That being said, there were only a couple of times where that was an issue, and with this book coming in under $5 for current members, it’s definitely worth a listen.
