It also makes a case that many of our efforts to cope, whether anxiety and denial, or tribalism and identity politics, are likely making things worse.

The middle section, The Alchemist Cookbook, applies the creative firm IDEO’s design thinking to the meaning crisis. This is where the book gets hands on - taking a look at the strongest evolutionary drivers that can bring about inspiration, healing, and connection. From breathing, to movement, sexuality, music, and substances - these are the everyday tools to help us wake up, grow up, and show up. AKA - how to blow yourself sky high with household materials. And the best part? They’re accessible, by anyone anywhere, no middleman required. Transcendence democratized.

The final third of the book, Ethical Cult Building, focuses on the tricky nature of putting these kinds of experiences into gear and into culture - because, anytime in the past when we’ve figured out combinations of peak states and deep healing, we’ve almost always ended up with problematic culty communities. Playing with fire has left a lot of people burned. This section lays out a road map for sparking a thousand fires around the world - each one unique and tailored to the needs and values of its participants. Think of it as an open-source toolkit for building ethical culture.

In Recapture the Rapture, we’re taking radical research out of the extremes and applying it to the mainstream - to the broader social problem of healing, believing, and belonging. Recapture the Rapture review

Just finished this book via audible.
I listened to all of it, which says a lot for me.

Although the ideas and philosophies come at you fast and furious it offers humor, insight, and a deep curiosity to dig deeper. Especially in these ultra confusing times.
I’ve listened to a few interviews that Jamie has recently done on line, and to me he seems humble, extremely intelligent, and sincere in his message for helping humanity.
I will most definitely have to listen to it again as it is a shit ton take in!
As one person said you can literally feel your brain growing as you do.

Inspiring and informative

It’s full of practical knowledge of how to build strong communities and society, and packed with techniques and tools for better health, peak states and deep healing from traumas.

Beautifully written, entertaining, and very relevant

This book was reminiscent of Stealing Fire but goes beyond just the different forms of ecstasis and altered states and paints a picture of possible solutions to move forward into a paradigm that is no longer zero sum - the infinite game. This book succinctly details the current “conspirituality” landscape and rapture ideologies and gives us a clear way forward.

Highly entertaining, funny, and well performed by the author. If you’ve ever enjoyed any of Jamie Wheels content, this is the mother load, and you’re in for a treat. Enjoy.

Convincing Perspective

Scratches away the thin vail of forgetting we humans actively adorn ourselves with. Very convincing perspective of our condition while offering practical and historically practices to rise above it all.

Too cool (or not) Flow state apologist

Life coach Tony Robbins but for cool-kid gen x-ers. Sigh. The rebellious cool language is strong with this one, but it’s liberating and empowering. His brain is abnormally sharp. This book is full of pearls of insights but more so fun connections from Jesuit Teilhard de Chardin to Soulforce. Don’t expect to learn deeply about any one notion. He paints all religions with a broad dismissive (little condescending) brush. He’s the rebel child you like or the parent you don’t want to challenge and force off his self-focused pedestal, and he’s self aware enough to caution against taking his ideas to extremes.
I loved it. I hated it. He gets me, and you’ll get him. It’s worth hearing for the many connections he makes even if they’re mostly reminiscent of the more intellectual level-headed Christian apologists.

Unifying rituals and humanity in general

The book felt like a fast-medium pased rite of passage. Perfect timing as well. I would recommend this book to anyone in a tight spot and whoever feels like they have the weight of the world on their shoulders.

Homo-Sapiens to Homo-Ludens

While we may not be able to find the promised land ourselves, with the help of books like these, we can hope our children will.

Want to think?

This was a great book- it got me thinking and challenged me in great ways. There is a lot here to get your head wrapped around.

good performance, some great and interesting ideas, too much fluff and stories at times,
